Colorado likely to legalize mj statewide
    #5944755 - 08/08/06 04:52 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

got this off hightimes. :gethigh:

DENVER -- Voters could be deciding on whether to legalize marijuana statewide this fall.

Members of the group Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation dropped off 129,000 signatures at the Secretary of State's office Monday morning. The signatures of 68,000 registered Colorado voters have to be verified before the measure can be placed on the ballot.

"The fact that we collected nearly twice as many signatures as are required under statute highlights the widespread support for ending the madness of marijuana prohibition in Colorado," said SAFER Campaign Director Mason Tvert.

The measure, if approved by voters, would make possession of one ounce of marijuana legal in Colorado for those 21 or older.

SAFER helped get a similar measure on last fall's ballot that made the same amount of marijuana legal in Denver. Initiative 100 was approved by a majority of Denver voters and made the city the first in the country to vote to remove all penalties for private adult marijuana possession.

However, state authorities had said Denver's Initiative-100 was virtually meaningless because of state and federal laws that make even small amounts of marijuana illegal.

Tvert said even though Denver voters had expressed their opinion that a small pinch of pot should be legal, people were still being arrested and prosecuted under state law and he wants that to stop.

The statewide proposal would get rid of the state's prohibition of marijuana and allow cities to make the rules about pot use.

"Last year's victory in Denver clearly demonstrated the support we're receiving in the state Capitol," Tvert said. "But tens of thousands of signatures poured in from Colorado Springs, Grand Junction and other areas of the state outside the Front Range. This just goes to show that regardless of Colorado citizens' political persuasions, many agree that punishing adults for using a substance less harmful than alcohol is an absurd waste of time, money and life."

The state's attorney general, John Suthers, does not buy the argument that pot is safer. He and the governor feel the measure would be defeated in the fall. Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff -- a Denver Democrat -- opposes changing the state law. He thinks drug use in the state is already too high and said the matter would wind up in the courts.

Monday Is Deadline To Turn In Signatures

Monday is the deadline to submit petition signatures to the Secretary of State's office to place an initiative on the November ballot.

The Secretary of State's office said there could be as many as 20 citizen initiatives in November. That number is close to the record that was set 94 years ago, when Coloradans were asked to vote on 22 proposals.

So far, at least 13 have been approve before the deadline.

Analysts said the long list likely will lead to more absentee or early voting.  add a comment now >

The madness needs to stop. If Colorado has enough sense to end prohibition, I might just move there.

Hopefully this makes people realize what is really going on and that it needs to be stopped. The public need to rise up against these situations and take action and not just stand by any longer.

Yo Microsmatrix,

mason@saferchoice.org (mason tyvert)

I just googled SAFER.

My guess is that he will just say thank you for your support and then direct you to this link:

http://www.saferchoice.org/d_getinvolved.html

Good luck, bro. Way to live in a smart state!

Micro never leaves his house. LOL

I've only been asked to sign petition at: Denver Nuggets games, 16th Street Mall, Pepsi Center, Red Rocks and Pearl Street in Boulder.

Plus they don't need anymore signatures - they have enough the state needs to verify that people are registered voters that signed and it will be on the ballot. The real important thing to do is be registered to vote and go and vote on voting day. Getting on the ballet is one issue getting in the books is another.

Even having a 215, I sitll don't go to the courthouse to smoke a J.
Just means that I can stay home with quantity of weed( wholesale now!) and not fear prosecution. But ya still gotta be smart. Personal Only!!
BTW- The amounts change from city-limit to city-limit. Then you have county land. then state...gets confusing..
Bottom line: until it becomes 100% legal in a large area( states or countries), it's best to stay low-key, and civil disobedience in your own home.
Peace

This is a first step. Once its legallized there, the positive effects everyone has been arguing since god knows when will come about. Over 40% of the jail inmates in Colorado (possibly more) will be release.. all minor drug offenders. Massive amounts of money will return to the eceonomy because that money won't be spent on prisoners.. over 40 thousand per prisoner per year. Colorado will flourish, and once they see the financial gains, other states are going to follow suit.

This is very exciting, and I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Hold up I'm slightly confused about an issue. If colorado says its okay to have an ounce of weed isn't it still illegal federally? Than if I'm not mistaking the federal government or supreme court will have to decide whether to let them slide or not which I don't think they would. I hope I'm wrong.

That's not gonna happen, is it? I imagine that MJ will be legalized in the state, or rather decriminalized for less than an ounce, but does that grandfather in all of those drug offenders? I don't think there's anyway that Colorado is going to release tens of thousands of inmates just because this bill passes. That would be devastating to all those rich prison-industrial-complex good ole boys, and they got lots of power.

The supreme court wont decide this issue. If legalization is attained in the state of Colorado, state and city funded agencies will enforce the new laws, while federal agencies will continue to enforce the federal laws. Most everyone who gets busted with an ounce or less, is busted by local cops, not the DEA or FBI. Depending how hellbent the feds are at busting pot smokers in Colorado, it could get ugly. I hope we wont be seeing special agencies created to police federal marijuana laws in Colorado/ any other states to follow suit.
