Does anybody else really not like to fly?

I'm going out to Arizona in a couple of months. I will be flying. I am not enthused about this.
When I was younger I used to hop on planes like it was no big deal. However, as I get older I like flying less and less. I went from being uneasy about it to being very uneasy about it currently. I'll do it....but I am not looking forward to it.
This aversion to flying started when I went through some turbulence on a flight about seven years ago. The plane was shaking like God himself was smacking the plane around. I have come to the conclusion that a plane crash is on par with being eaten alive as the "Worst way to die". Go ahead and shoot me, stab me, hit me with a car, etc....just don't let be eaten or die in a plane crash.

I love to fly.
To me, there isnt much that compares to being pressed back into your seat while huge jets burn copius amounts of fuel in order to shudder and shake you into the sky.
And the views from the sky are breathtaking.
I would go out of my way to fly. I've flown from Milwaukee-Chicago before. Thats like, a 45 minute DRIVE, and we spent longer taxi'ing than we did in the air.
I've flown in small planes, big planes, hot air balloons and would go up on the space shuttle if they'd let me...

The weird thing is I'm not afraid of heights at all. I routinely go up on high things and throw my legs over the side (I intend on doing that on one of the thousand foot ledges on the Grand Canyon when I'm out there). But, the thought of careening toward the ground for minutes on end and not being able to do anything about it makes me nauseous with dread.

Take a bunch of benzos ~20 minutes before you board. You'll be fine. I do this everytime I fly anywhere- couple it with a few drinks on the plane and you'll sleep the whole flight through.

Commercial flying makes me a little nervous because a cousin of mine is a pilot for american airlines and I've heard some fucked up stories.
Its not so bad though but dentist > flying

I really do not like to fly! I am such a freakin' pussy about it, too. I've been on a plane many times, even flown to Europe, but it never gets any easier. It really sucks, because: !!!! I am prone to motion sickness (yes at 27 I still get car sick on occasion ) and also anxious about the flight. So no matter how much I try to breathe and calm myself, I end up sweaty profusely and becoming nauseous. I dose with Dramamine, but this doesn't usually help with the ralphs, just helps me sleep the flight away. God I hate flying :shudder:

I don't think I'm scared of flying(if I was then I wouldn't get on planes)...I just REALLY don't like it. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I'm not in control and if something were to happen I would know that I was going to die for a long time as I plummeted toward the ground. Although, as my super-turbulent plane of seven years ago rattled and shook in the air I felt a very real sensation of fear. It was like, "Oh shit...this would suck if we went down."
Motion sickness must suck (I've never gotten it).

I haven't flown since I was 18. I had a bunch of flights all buched together due to military stuff. I never wanted to fly, and after flying on everything from a 15 seater to a 727, I can honestly say, I HATE that crap!! I can't even imagine it now from the stories I hear about the airport security and all the garbage that you have to go through just to risk your life with some shmuck you've never even met at the controls. My mom worked at the airport as a front for a few years to sling her crap, and she knew a lot of pilots, and the stories.... I don't care, either way, if I ever fly again, it's too soon for me.

That's funny, cause I kind of like the feeling of not being in control. Just lie back and hold on, ya know? My mom suggested I treat it like a roller coaster, in that everything that is happening, including turbulence, is supposed to happen and I should just enjoy it. And to an extent I do enjoy it, I usually love take-off, it's very exhilarating. But soon my confused inner ear and weak stomach take over and cause me discomfort. Yeah, motion sickness sucks and can be a pain in the ass. In Holland I was taking the train to Amsterdam, and it was a double decker train. We were on the top and jus the exaggerated swaying was enough to make me spill my breakfast in the central station.

I remember flying right after that Reid guy tried to blow up that flight with his shoe bomb. The airport security made us take all of our shoes off. And on top of that there were several Arab dudes on my flight. I watched them like a fucking hawk. I even had my seat belt unbuckeled in case one of them tried anything so I could easily jump up and karate chop the towel-heads into oblivion.

For you scaredy-cats, just remember this....
I work at an international airport, and 50% of the people who work there are on drugs, like me. If you ever fly into milwaukee, I've smoked pot on the job with your baggage handlers, de-icers, marshallers, fuelers, and in some cases mechanics.
If you werent scared before.....

I would be more worried about the De-Icers being high than the mechanics.
Mechanical shit is all filled out in triplicate and overseen by the FAA, as well as the individual airlines.
De-Icing is a judgement call by a 19 year old stoner standing on a 50 feet boom in -20 degree weather. HE decides when the job is done. As soon as he gives the okay, he can go inside, sit in the break room and drink coffee and eat cookies until another flight comes in....

Hey!!!! Well, here is what makes flying better for me:
1. You're more likely to kill yourself then die in an airplane. If you aren't going to kill yourself, you can fly with no worries!
2. You're more likely to kill yourself on your BIKE then die in an airplane.
I remember these things...and I am a happy flier.

I work for a cargo hauler. We dont even fly people. (With Exceptions).
But I work on the same ramp with people from United/Delta/Southwest and Midwest Express. We're all friendly with each other, 'cause the airport only has so much equipment, and we swap all the time. We all go to the same bars after work and smoke in the same parking lot on breaks.
