Height of casing tray?
    #5944401 - 08/08/06 03:01 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

How tall does a casing tray need to be? I have limited height in the place im planing on placing my casing trays. Would the shrooms hitting the top effect the yeild? I dont really care if they are deformed, as long as i get a decent yeild.

well

you want a minimum of 1-1.5" of substrate.  2-3 is better, 4 is better yet, much more than 4 doesn't really help you anymore.  thinner substrates usually mean smaller mushrooms, a 1.5" sub will probably give you mushrooms that get to about 4" on average, so you could put a thinner substrate to work to your advantage in this situation - it buys you extra space, and means the mushrooms you grow won't be quite so tall.

dont forget about a half inch to apply your casing layer onto that.

so, how much substrate do you have?  its best to find appropriate trays (ones that you'll fill level to the brim, once you include casing layer.)  remember the simple math, area = LxWxH, about 58 cubic inches in a quart (4 half-pints per quart) etc and work it out.

the more head space above obviously the better.  if they hit the top, they'll just bend sideways, so yea they'll be deformed but they'll keep growing with hunched over stems   you can run into trouble if there's especially lots of condensation and the caps get wet and stay wet - they could rot... so hopefully you have enough space that they're only hitting the top on the last day or two of the grow.  shouldn't be too much an issue though.
