Pins on side, nothing on top??

OK, I put my cakes in the fruiter about 5-6 days ago. I have been fanning once-2 a day. I have a couple of pins on the sides near the botom, but nothing going on on the top. Do I need to take off more Vermiculite. Also, can I spray the cakes directly??
Thanks!

pins form where conditions are best for pin formation. that's not a smart-ass remark, but something for you to think about. what's different on your cakes about the area where they are forming then the areas where they are not? i'll leave it as a little riddle for you to figure out
yes, it might involve more or less verm, but for anybody to say that without knowing what exactly you got going on at the moment would be fortune telling and yes, you can mist cakes, don't spray them directly, instead spray over them, allow fine mist to drift down onto them. you don't want the force of the spraying water to damage them, nor do you want large water droplets on them, but any verm you may have rolled or double-end cased with, needs to remain damp if its going to encourage pin development.

You might need a little more or less verm. You could also possibly need to move your light source.
Think about it.. if you were mycelium, you'd start inside the earth, or inside a pile of poo. It'd be all dark, warm, and filled with CO2 from your own breathing.
Then one day you grow all the way to the surface of your substrate house. Since you're at the surface, your suddenly seeing light. Something you've never seen before. You're also getting exposed to fresh air constantly - much less CO2 because now it can be vented off with ease. Its also a bit cooler since you don't have your own warmth, and the warmth of the earth, keeping it toasty.
So, look at your casing, and think about it. What are those little guys on the side experiencing that the ones on the top aren't. Remember, myc grow towards light. Also, with PF cakes, the pins often almost all occur on the sides. I've seen it quite a few times. If you have end casings on them with vermiculite, I doubt you'll have many pins growing through that verm. However you will likely have bigger flushes off the sides thanks to the extra moisture, which makes up for the lack of pins on the top.
Hope this gives some insight and helps you figure out what your mush are doing

All the light is coming in on top of them. I have Perlite, and the cakes are siting on Aluminum foil. The best I can figure is that the sides are getting more moisture. I dont think I have to much verm. I scraped a lot of it off when i took them out of the jars.

The perlite and foil reflect light back up. That might be the brightest spot. Not to worry, it's all good. RR

I had not even thought of that. Should I cut thefoil to the size of the bottom of the cake, so the ligh does not hit it?

No. It won't hurt. Your yields won't change much. With cakes, you seem to either get a few mushrooms that get really large, or lots of little ones. It really doesn't effect total yield very much where they pin from. You're fine.
It could also be that your cake is a bit dry. The moisture sinks to the bottom by gravity, so that could be it as well. Just dunk between flushes. You might also want to increase the fanning a bit. They want lots of air exchange/fresh air. RR
