vermiculite vs. perlite
    #5936086 - 08/06/06 02:07 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I was womdering if perlite can be substituted for vermiculite for the substrate mixture. And also if lava rocks are as good as geolite for the bedding in the terrarium for the poor mans setup. I have heard rumors about the lava rocks retaining enough moisture to support mycelium growth.

verm is way better but perlite will do. it doesnt hold water as well as vermiculite and the lava rocks I have never used. I bet you'd have to use a bubble wand with that.

do not substitute perlite for vermiculite in your substrate.

This question gets asked every few weeks.

Put the perlite in the poor mans pod, get vermiculite for the substrate.

So is the perlite used as a bedding in place of lava rocks/geolite?

Perlite holds air, vermiculite holds water. They're for two totally different purposes.

Perlite, rinsed and drained well, will provide an excellent source of humidity in a terrarium, because it has a large surface area to evaporate moisture from. Lay it in the bottom 2" deep after rinsing and draining. I use no standing water at all, and achieve 99% humidity.

Vermiculite absorbs water and serves to hold it for your flush. Use it as the recipe calls for in pf cakes and also if you make up compost or even horse manure substrates, a small amount of vermiculite helps to hold water as well as to prevent clumping. In bulk substrates, it's optional of course, but I've found it does help.

If you're new to this, don't experiment, just follow a TEK to the letter.

Then experiment and report back.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot, guys. I traded the perlite in for verm. I'm pretty confident that everything wil go smoothly for my first grow.
