My grow
#5942617 - 08/07/06 11:20 PM (17 years, 5 months ago) |

I started my first marijuana grow on July the 15th when I planted my first seed. Later, on the 20th, I planted nine others. Two of those never sprouted (Bad seeds maybe?) They are in my sun room, and get light from 10:00 till 8:00. I water them every day and send them good vibes. I'm wondering if there is anything else I can do for them. Is there anything I'm not doing. Since this is my first grow, my inexperience is affecting my confidence. I life in Victoria BC. Will the winter come too soon for them to grow properly? I can post more pictures as they grow or if anyone needs a close-up or anything. Thanks for the help.

ok, my tips for beginners is, A)get a good light, like a 400 watt hps/mh light. thats like 150 dollars. keep it inside under the light for 24 hours for 2-3 months then start going on a 12/12 schedule. stay on that for 55 days, after that it shiuld be ready.

Thanks for the advice MattH, but I think I want to use only natural light for this, I still live with my parents so they might not be cool with a light in their sun room.

shit yea, if you got a 'sun room' that should be enough light
is it a south facing room?

The room is south facing, Schwip, they get tons of light.
And yes, my parents are cool with me growing pot as long as they get some of it.

Put them in some bigger pots. 2-3 gallon should be good. 5 gallon would be better. Bigger pots, bigger pot plants.

This grow doesn't use natural light does it cause it is way to late in the year to be starting plants. Most plants are in budding right now.

They'll produce bud but not as much as if they'd had a longer vegetative growth period.

Veg for 2-3 MONTHS!??!?!? Maybe weeks, good lord. After a month under a Sod. they get huge. I would reccommend Veg for 3-4 weeks, and then flower for 65 days give or take.
BTW, transplant those ASAP, and bury the stem a bit in the ground so they aren't so tall and lanky

I vegged for 10 days and flowered 63 days. Got 317g under a 400W light, first time.
It's late in the year to be growing under the sun. Your yield will probably be small. Next time start in June or something.

Does anyone have any resources on the curing process? What is it and how does it work?

A common method:
Chop plants and trim all leaves protruding from the buds.
Hang plants in a dry, dark cabinet/closet/drawer/cupboard (you get it) for a few days. Not too dry because you don't want your plants to dry too quickly and not too humid because they can mold. After a few days test your stems: bend them, if they bend they need more drying. If they are able to snap or break then you should be ready to cure.
To cure, place buds, carefully packed, into glass on glass seal mason jars. Open the jars twice a day for air to circulate and moisture to leave for a week then once a day for a couple of weeks, then you are probably ready to leave them in there indefinitely. If they stink like rot, they are too wet and you'll have to leave the jars open or even take them out for a bit more drying. It's not anything you can do perfectly the first try. It takes patience and experience to get it right. Remember, mistakes happen but you can always learn from them.

What does curing do to the buds? I hear it improves flavour and smokability. What are some other things I can do with the leaves? ( since they too contain at least some THC)

Curing helps the smoothness, and gets rid of the planty taste (chlorophyl).
Make butter with the trim.
Make butter.

Update:
The largest plant has just grown its first five-fingered leaves, and it now has a deliciously subtle aroma. The smaller ones are growing, but not as quickly as the larger one. I have not been able to put them in larger pots yet. I might get around to doing in a couple of days.
The first three pics are of my plants, while the other two are of my friend's plants that she is keeping in my backyard. Any advice for her?

On of my frind's plants started to flower. What is this crap? Is it male and therefore in line for destruction? I can't get a photo of the flowers but they are white with yellow centers and are in bunches of about four or five.

It sounds like males, little bunches of spherical white/yellowy flowers that hang down from the nodes.

Nice. Your big one looks like mine did when it first went outside, now it's a monster! Good luck, in a week or two those smaller ones will take off as well. How old is the large plant? If its 3-4 weeks it can handle some fertilizer. If you can find it, I would recommend Alaskan Organic Fish Emulsion fertilizer. I would dilute it a little bit extra just to make sure you don't burn your plant.

Nice, AKSE. The bigger plant is a little over a month old, from when I planted the seed. I have some standard fertilizer, so I think I'll mix it up with some water 1 tsp. per gallon. I might not need to though, since they are potted in some high quality compost.

Some of the newest leaves that are just sprouting are a shade of redish brown. What is this? It is happening on all of my plants, so I guess it has to do with their current environment. Perhaps it has something to do with me moving them outside?

well dependant on how long u had them under floros. and did u put them right out side and leave em or give em time to adjust to the heat and extreme light (compared to the floros heat and light) if its beacuse of outside..

Alrighty, None of my plants have shown sex yet and I am really hoping for most of them to be female. Some plants have shown small round dots of discolouration on their leaves. Upon closer inspecion it was revealed to be small black insects. I killed all that I could find, and will keep a close eye on them. I put some 20-30-20 fertilizer on the biggest one and noticed no burn, so I might give it some more soon. Enjoy the pics.

Honey Oil: http://www.erowid.org/plants/cannabis/cannabis_info13.shtml Maybe use a metal pipe instead of PVC (might contaminate the oil). And be careful, do it outside. It's explosive. Also use pure butane (no additives) You can also buy the Honey Bee extractor (do a search). Makes it a lot easier. I haven't tried it yet, but will probably get the Honey Bee soon.
Your plants are still quite small, how old are they now? Don't water them too often. They want slightly damp soil, not wet soil.

wont work. im afraid thay will just keep on multiplying and cut your yeild (at LEAST) in half or worse.
furthermore, unless you bug bomb the place, you will get them on each crop you attempt.
probably the worst pest to get. they so thuroghly weaken your plants.
ive tried evrything, NOTHING really gets rid of them, dayly rinsing, soaps, poisons, NOTHING.

the borg will adapt, then return.
as long as you dont mind spraying evryday you can keep them at bay, but know this, they are still there, waiting to thrive again.
the damage they do doesn't really heal, it weakens and stresses the plant a great ammount. so if you let your treatment slip for a few days, you are right back to square one. a really strong fan might give you a further edge. if the leaves are blowing around, the mites cant breed well

I just got back from camping on the west coast to find that my plants are doing well. All of the smaller ones are showing the classic five-fingered leaf pattern. They are not growing quite as fast as I might like though. Can I speed up the process without using a grow light? Also, none have shown any sex yet.

What does one look for if they are thinking of harvsting some bud? The plant has frosty looking buds and some purple/brown hairs. Does the quality of the bud really get hurt if you harvest too early?
