wouldnt colonizing a spawn bag and tearing it open(!) into a terrarium (with casing layer), basicaly be the same as casing?

yup.

and why not just take it a small step further and spread the contents out into a tray then cover with a casing layer... keeps light off the sides and bottom, makes an even substrate for an even pinset and a nicer flush.

and why not take it one step further...

if you let that bag colonized while resting in the tub, it will will mold the bag to the perfect fit when it comes time to birth, that way you dont have to break it up to get it in the tray.
