I have 8-10 ounces of Acorus and today I spent quite a few hours chewing and swallowing the juice. I must have chewed an ounce before I stopped, I had a very euphoric energetic buzz. The buzz has since stopped and no effects were felt until just a few minutes ago when I started to feel kinda euphoric again, and now colors are really enhanced and I have that euphori-floaty feeling in my chest. I feel like im tripping, yet theres not enough visual and ego effects to place me in that category. I do feel loved, and warm though. Like ive got a big comfy blanket around me.
This is weird since I have been chewing calamus for a long time and never felt this sort of effect, but I usualy never chew more than a mouthful (it gets me up on my feet in the morn)
I have a hunch that my calamus might be the asian kind that supposedly has beta-asarones in it, since its very spicy, and not as much of a sweet flavor as the stuff I buy fresh and local.
Very euphoric, not very visual, I like it though I feel cozy.

The one time I tried calamus it resulted in the worst vomiting experience of my life. Nothing happened for the first 4 hours, then I started feeling really sick so I puked up a ton and tried to go to sleep. I woke up 6 more times in the night to throw up. It was pretty awful. The exact same thing happened to my friend who tried at the same time. He threw out the rest of the calamus. Neither of us will ever try it again. I don't know how you can chew that shit.. it tastes awful.

after a while of chewing, you get so used to the burn that it becomes bland, and all u taste is sweet and spiced (not hot, spiced like nutmeg)
Calamus actualy would prevent you from vomiting more than it would make you vomit. Calamus, like melaleuca, must be grown in clean conditions, as they soak up anything in the water around them. Most calamus are grown near swamps, and I hate to say it but most swamps are POLLUTED with who knows how many different things. You have to really know your source, I only buy from herb suppliers who have tried their stuff. This lady gets its imported from somewhere she "couldn't pronounce" so im guessing its some asian or indian strain, maybe even german. I've found this calamus to be much hotter in spice though, it burns worse than grizzly chew, and the euphoric stimulant feeling is almost instantaneous, as 30 seconds or so into it I start to feel the oncome of effects. This much just have been a fairly fresh batch, I better start munchin' it up before it goes impotent.
Also ive read through quite a few lycaeum and erowid sources that alot of the time vomiting from calamus is caused by bacterial growth from poor curing conditions. Most american sources dont dry their calamus in the proper way for holding potency anyways, so I dont see the use of it as anything other than a get me up alternative to coffee. But this new batch is something different, nothing I can chew while at work thats for sure. My boss would probably feel weird if I was in a huggy mood

is it necessary to swallow juices or is the action sublingual in nature?
i gather any potential vomiting is from actually swallowing material or making tea, and that chewing a little bit is a proper way to use with no ill effect.

well i got some today and chewed maybe 1.5 2 spoonfulls.
i did not swallow the juice, because it tasted funky and i was worried it would make me vomit.
about an hour ago is when i first started, with a lot amount, chewed for a few minutes then spit. then i realized that i probably didn't have quite enough and took a larger amount..... chewed this for a while until i started to feel a buzz, and the juice was getting to me so then i spit that.
that was 40 mins ago. I went for a walk and such and wasn't sure if I felt it. at first it was just kind of barely light and fluffy....... but now that i'm back from the walk there is a calm "up" to things..... there's a good bodily energy, it is subtle, but it would be compared to if you had a bit of caffeine, except it feels clean, relaxing, and less uppity..... more gentle.... in terms of how the body feels.
calamus could be a neat thing i think. its supposed to be good for congestion and head/chest colds so i look forward to seeing if this is so.

well theres a few varieties. calamus which isnt reported to be stimulant, americana which is said to be highly hallucinogenic, and graemin or something thats reported to be highly carcinogenic. theres so much conflicting info. I swallow my juice but not solids....
most vomitting comes from the root being dried improperly for consumption, as the DEA makes it hard for shops who sell it, claiming it unfit for consumption. alot of the times when its cured for potpouri, bacteria can grow on it, causing vomitting diahreaa etc after u chew.
some described the effects of calamus as walking a few inches above the ground, and i can agree.

real quick in the sun
i believe they dry the potpouri kind real slow, and sometimes it molds, but they dont care cause they dry it for the smell, but then herb shops get ahold of it and thats why u barf. also like the melaleuca tree, like mushrooms, like many other water-absorbing lifeforms, the calamus rhizome will absorb any bad chemicals in the water source around them, so its good to know your source. eating a rhizome that absorbed bad metals and things can lead to some fairly scary hospital visits.

mine is claimed as organicly grown north american from a shroomery sponsor. some guy on erowid claims that they aren't carcinogenic at all, because only one compound was given to rats in levels so high that a human would be very hard pressed to ever match them........ asarone or something? i don't recall. he was the only guy on erowid who seemed to know what he was doing.
at any rate so today i had myself a chew and spit everything. i felt just a small bit happy/giddy while cooking breakfast and then went to work. not a good mixture. i was jittery and impatient and broke something and felt like fine minute motor movements are not good while on calamus. i wasn't sure the whole time if it was a placebo or if i was just a bit up from the root.
but when i left work (only had 1 hour of things to do) i felt very nice and outgoing and such...... and really quite happy.
so i like calamus. i can see how it might be trippy too in higher doses. i'm debating trying to get a strong high by just chewing lots of it sublingually till i really feel something.
i'm also debating whether it's okay as a daily use for just being more chippy and upbeat. i don't feel a real "come down" and no "crash" or anything. but it makes me kind of impatient with people. i want to hug them and like engage socially really quick but i realize it's not appropriate to do either. and it has the same kind of effect on me that being stoned does in the sense that i monitor my beavhior constantly, wondering how i look to other people
but this must just be a psychological issue with me then.
i do say though i like it. i'm afraid to try swallowing the juice but that would probably give better effects. it does seem to work strictly sublingually though.
what source would you recommend ? this one is trustworthy to me. their product seems clean, it's kind of spongy though and i am wondering if it should be really really dry?

yes it should be like chewing powdery stryofoam or something, it will crumble apart but be somewhat squishy. sometimes the pieces can be rather hard as a rock too...
i get mine from a local herbshop, but the lady orders hers from india or something, she said its "the good kind"
