Ok, I want to use grains but I dont want to do casings, someone here on the forum said it was possible. Do I need to mix vermiculite? or just prep the grains and sterilize, and treat it like a BRF cake?

Probably possible, but likely much harder than casing...
It is very simple to case. Especially if you just use verm/peat instead of poo.
Sry I cant answer your question... Unless you are simply experimenting my advice is - if you allready wanna go to grain is Just case em!

You can case straight verm. Many people have tried and got good results. With just verm casing layer you might want to pay attention to how dry it gets, the peat moss helps to maintain a good moisture level over longer periods in time. However do not use straight peat moss, from experience and review verm is a better route. I personally have medium casing spawning now to a coco coir/blood-bone meal/WBS cased with a verm layer. Also with Verm; it is sterile out of the sealed bag so no need to sterilize. Thats my two cent. Good luck with your grow.

I'm scared to work with casings due to the higher risks of contaminations, with brf cakes I usually lost 1 out of 3 jars due to contams. But the potency was really great, I don't see why some people complain about potency with BRF cakes(I grind my own brown rice, the mahatma brand). The main reason I want to use WBS is because I wasn't getting big enough mushrooms, or sometimes not that many on one cake. O.K boosthappyvw, what if I add some verm to the WBS, to help keep moisture in the cake? do you reckon that would work? any suggestions on this from anybody would be of great help, surely there is a way to make this work, and have good results. P.S Thanks to all of you for the help, and suggestions.

If you're insistent on doing a cake instead of a tray (you don't have to case a tray with cubes) you want to use equal amounts of verm and WBS. It's the only way it will hold enough moisture.

im not saying what will or not work for you , but i tryed to fruit a WBS cake one time. 4 weeks latter i gave up. however i did not think about adding verm to my cake. a dunk, and rool might also help.
the only time i had a contam problem with casing is when one of my filters fell out of my mono tub, the tub was way too wet, and it took me 2 days to see that i was missing a filter. myc is resistent to contams. im still somewhat new at this, but i vote case.

If you want to fruit on grains, don't use WBS.
USE RYE.
You will get a far better crop if you case it.
