First time with WBS

Alrighty, at the store I only saw one large bag of WBS, "Morning Song Songbird Garden Bird Seed." Pic
According to the box, the main ingredients are Millet, Sunflower Seeds, Safflower Seeds, and vitamins/minerals. I looked at another bag to see the measurements, which appeared to be mostly millet, and safflower. I'm gonna try to pick out the sunflower seeds that I find. Has anyone used this before? Will it work alright?

i wouldn't use that stuff. Sunflower and safflower seeds are alot alike. Neither or which you want as a main ingredient. They sell multiple brands of WBS at walmart for cheap, or at lowes or home depot..

Damn. I just got it at the supermarket and was hoping it'd do - walmart is about a half hour drive for me, conveniently located next to home depot.
Blah.
Just looked at the ingredients: Ingredients: black oil sunflower, striped sunflower, safflower, grain products, white millet, peanuts. No milo.

Alrighty... i'll see if the grocery store will take it back tomorrow. Maybe I'll luck out.
I'm looking for mostly millet, I know. What else are acceptable ingredients? Cracked or whole corn? Wheat?

Primary content should be red/white millet, Milo (sorghum), with as few sunflower seeds, and whole, or cracked corn as possible.
Frankly, the most inexpensive bulk bag, or barrel type is usually the best.
Pet Co, or Pet Smart chain stores carry a Bird Basic Brand 40 lb bag for around $8. I skim off the bulk of the sunflower seed floaters. Without going to the trouble to get the last couple percent. I have used about 160 lbs of that brand, without any problem.

For removing sunflower seed skim off the top right after you add water for the seed to soak in. After you have cleared the top layer, take a stick or spoon and stir the mix. Aggitation should cause more sunflower seed to rise to the top. If you're using a large pot I suggest doing it at least 5 times to get it good and clean. Also a good way to remove them is to take a cup and take water & sunflower seed out then dump it into the strainer above the water so the water can go back into the pot.

I use a 5 gallon plastic bucket, and lid. I fill the bucket from 2/3rds, to 3/4 full of dry WBS. Add water, skim floaters, stir, skim again.
Then, fill the bucket with more water, to within about an inch of the lip. Cover with lid, and soak about 36 to 40 hours at normal room temperatures.
I peek a couple times, in the last 1/4 of the soak time span.
First thing I check is SEED EXPANSION.
Naturally hydrated WBS swells about 20 to 25% in size, when fully hydrated. Just lifting the lid, if the WBS has expanded to near the top of the bucket. That tells me, they are ready to go. Having nearly filled the bucket, from being 2/3rds - 3/4 full of dry WBS to start.
Second thing I look for is if you give the bucket a mild kick, or stir the content. You will see a lot of funky gas bubbles float to the top of the WBS water.
What that tells me is that bacterial, and microbial action is occurring in the WBS content. Which usually means, besides all the crap in the mix, endospores are also germinating.
At that stage, I pay a bit closer attention to the bucket. I sometimes wait 6, even 12 hours more. To insure the WBS has soaked up its maximum natural capacity.
What you have to be careful of, is SEED GERMINATION. If you wait a little to long, and see a few seeds starting to sprout, you should get to work IMMEDIATELY, rinse very well, drain very well, load jars, and PC without hesitation.
