shitty hygrometer
    #5938470 - 08/06/06 09:28 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Has anyone used this hygrometer before?

Sorry about the poor photo quality. The maker is Springfield, and I bought it at wal-mart. The reason this post is here is because it used to read 95% RH all the time (that's as high as it could read), but I set up a PMP, put this hygrometer in, and it said 95% RH at first, but then I went camping, came back 5 days later, and now it says the humidity ranges wildly; between 75 and 90% RH.

Has anyone had a similar experience, or used the same crappy hygometer?

I am tight on cash for about another month, so I can't buy a good one, so I'm asking for all of your opinions. Do you think that the wild range in RH is due to a piss poor hygrometer, or do you think I really have humidity problems?

?? no, haven't used that one.

even if someone had used that kind, they could be calibrated differently.

to tell if it is working, salt test it.

I don't know how well my shrooms are doing yet because I threw away most of my cakes being as they were exhausted. Two were still pinning, so they're in there right now, on probably their last flush. I have several casing in there that may have died since I went camping and neglected them for a week, save my brother who misted them down twice over the five day span of my trip. Fresh out of the incubator, the myc had broken through the casing layer in like 5 or 6 spots throughout the casing. I patched and placed into the fruiting chamber. That was over a week ago, and no myc has broken through the 1/4" thick casing since the patching...

That wouldn't be an issue with the humidity per se, but the casings were dry as hell by the time I came back. Regardless, thanks for the input, I'll calibrate my POS hygrometer, buy the 14 dollar good one, and this thread is over, unless someone can tell me if I killed my casings.

Most inexpensive digital like yours are meant for household room use.

They simply will not withstand exposure to the high end of the Rh range, for very long, before they suffer major malfunctions.

In the $35 to 40, plus/minus a few bucks. A Taylor 1458, with the remote sensor (about $15)is a tried, true, and reliable digital hygrometer.

Personally, I use mason wet bulb type. They set the industry standard for consistent accuracy. Nothing mechanical, needs to batteries, if well cared for can last a century. You simply have to add a little water to the wet bulb wick side, every so often.

At first I though comparing 2 side by side thermometers, then comparing the difference to a chart to find the Rh, was going to be a constant tedious task.

Day one, after setting it up, then checking it, and the chart.

I realized, a smart person would make the top, and bottom of the optimal range, with a perma maker, right on the face of the hygrometer next to each thermometer. That way, with a single glance, you know the Rh is in the money, or not.

After ruining several digital ones with too high of humidity, i went to this one (knowing my system was more or less "stable" and this would provide immediate readings, although no highs-and-lows)

The bottom gage is the humidity. Works great! 90-100% humidity easily determined. You can buy it at most hardware stores.

Yep I own that Hygrometer! Piece of shit.... (just had to say it one more time) I kept it in my greenhouse for 2 days and when I took it out it was stuck in the high 70 - 80% range for like 2 more days. I live in the Vegas area so the humidity can never get that high outside of the greenhouse.

Anyone know if the "mushroom magic" (www.mushroommagic.com) Hygrometer is worth a shit? I would have gotten the Mason, but didn't see that till after I already bought it.

Thanks

Why don't you all make monotubs so you don't have to worry about humidity? Or just overload your tubs with perlite humidity and have a cup of water with a bubbler in it... Humidity really isn't much of a problem IME.

Just my 2 cents.

yeah why don't you all just change the way you grow completely and rely on monotubs which are slowly becoming apparent that they are inferior FC's aside from some sucesses..

I have that exact same one, got it at Walmart. Big piece of crap, if you ask me! Mine died the other day - didn't even last 2 months!

Why are mono-tubs inferior? What fruiting chamber do you recommend? Sorry this is off topic.
