River Toad Infected Toe. Help!
    #5936544 - 08/06/06 09:56 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Well, I hope this is okay that I'm posting this here. I had started another thread recently regarding my new Colorado River Toads but now I have a problem with one already. I noticed yesterday that there's a decent sized spot on the one's back right foot (the big middle toe) that looks chewed up and possibly infected. I thought all the crickets that I've put in with them were eaten right away but I could be wrong. So it's possible that a cricket nibbled on the poor little guy's toe. I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to clean it up/treat it. Or is this something fairly normal that will hopefully heal okay without me doing anything?

Give a Call to your local animal hospital or something, a vet, and ask what their suggestions would be?

I'm sure it will be fine on it's own. If they can survive in the wild after being harassed or bitten by other animals, I'm sure they will be fine from a little cricket nibble.

yes, call the vet, your never suppose to put more crickets, in at a time, then they can eat in a few hours, or
the crickets, will start to try and eat, the eaters.
thats what a manager at petco told me, she has a lot of frogs.
Good luck.

You should be able to get some sort antibiotic at a petsmart/petco type store that is meant for this sort of thing.

You will want to quarantine him probably.

A simple enclosure with just ink-free paper towels, water bowl, and a clean hiding place will suffice.

After the infection/wound clears up you can move him back into his normal housing.

yea there is some kind of soak for amphipians and turtles i think. you should go to www.ssnakess.com and google toad injury and read as much as you can on them so you can be prepared for anything and prevent things from happening.

I've actually only been giving them a few crickets each per night so it's not that I put too many in there. I guess they just didn't find one of them right away. Maybe it hid in the substrate for a while. I still need to verify that a few each per day is enough though. If they'll eat something as big as pinkie mice then it seems like maybe I should be feeding them a little more.

But, yeah, I'll look into buying some kind of soak or topical antibiotic for them. Unfortunately, I didn't exactly prepare for the possibility of having to quarantine them. I guess if I spent a couple hours looking around the house I could find something to put him in though. Thanks for the replies. I shot off an e-mail to the company I bought them from too.

sit him (foot submerged) in a mild shallow saltwater bath for 10 min, then rinse, put in clean tank, lower lighting.

^ yes, it will dry out the infection, and prevent further growth, containing the infection inside for healing.

Just dug out some old books.

For most infections that are, or may become fungal, a solution of 50% dilute hydrogen peroxide can be applied with a cotton swab/q-tip to the afflicted area.

After you quarantine your little buddy, try this out. Maybe daily for a few days, then let nature take over.

Wait until the afflicted area clears before returning him back to his normal home though.

Try not to stress your toad or yourself too much

Until you get something better, a little H202 wouldn't hurt.
Ah.. I didn't notice that someone already suggested that.^

I love how you just know that every shroomerite has h202 lying around. Believe it or not, large chain petstores (petsmart, petsco etc.) don't have much knowledge about any of their exotics- herps (reptiles) especially, it seems. So many times i've been in there and seen animals kepts in conditions totally wrong for them. Makes me fucking sick. CAll a vet, theres bound to be a vet that specializes or at least has a lot of experience with reptiles and amphibians. Call around, ask if they usually treat reps n' whatnot. Should be pretty easy from there.

the salt is not to dry up anything, it slightly irritates the skin, stimulating the animals natural immunity.

the lowered lighting is to reduce stress.

Yeah, I got in touch with an exotics specialist in my area and they just said to use hydrogen peroxide too. They said it may take as much as 3 weeks of applying it but I think as long as I have the toad quarantined I can probably get away with 1 to 1 1/2 weeks. Thanks everybody!

Exotics specialist or amphibian specialist.
I have been told for years.
H2O2 is only OK for the initial treatment of reptiles housed in dry environments.
NEVER use H2O2 on amphibians. It can cause burns to the thin skin. Causing the skin around the injury to become dry, crack, and contribute to the spread of bacterial and fungal growth.
My Bufo's are kept outside. After a rash of bluejay inflicted injuries, I was advised to change the water dish twice daily. Only use an antibacterial ointment on the wound and prevent fungal attacks by using a screen top to lower the ambient humidity in the cage.

WOW!  I'm glad I read the last 2 posts.  I just picked up some H202 today too.  Fortunately I haven't used it yet.

The people that I got in touch with weren't amphibian specialists specifically so I guess I'd do better to trust you guys over them.  In fact, the girl I had on the phone sounded surprised that someone would have a toad for a pet.  After explaining the problem to her for about 5 minutes she went to consult with the doctor.  Then she got back on the phone and asked, "Sir, is this toad your pet?".  I felt like coming back with something sarcastic but I held back.

So, in any case, I guess I'll just look for something online like an ointment.  I need to buy a different kind of substrate for the toads  too anyway.  I noticed that the bark chunks I put in there were coming out in their crap.

i am pretty sure that the big chain pet stores (petco, petsmart, ect.) have medications for sale for amphibians and herps... might be a good idea to go look there.. just dont bother asking the staff about what to use most of them dont have a clue on what you would need... Truffle if you are located in NY I actually think i have an antibiotic for amphibians somewhere around here...
(I have a couple poison dart frogs)... Let me know if i can be of some help

go to a animal forum to ask questions. although there is some knowledge here by that peroxide remark abviously people dont know enough that amphipian ski is VERY sensitive. next time if you want a pet do research before aswell.

peace

Yeah, I'm Southern Tier of New York (STONY), upstate. I appreciate your extending your help too but I think I should be fine just using neosporin like was said in the last post. I'll probably check @ the pet store that I frequent too for something though. I'm a member of a pet forum already too so I'm gonna post some questions on there as well.

I guess I probably could have done a little more research prior to getting the toads but I honestly didn't think Bouncing Bear was gonna have them available again. Then I got an e-mail that they were and I didn't know how much of a window of opportunity I'd have so I bought them right away. Overall I think I'm doing a pretty good job of caring for them though.
