Question about Psilocybe semilanceata
    #5935189 - 08/05/06 06:28 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

I can't post a photo, but I've been collecting what I'm pretty sure are Psilocybe semilanceata in the fields near my house in Wales, and was hoping someone could clear this up for me. The mushrooms I've found pretty much follow descriptions on this site (found in grass in small groups, dark brown/purple spore print, gills adnate etc), except that the caps are always wider than they are high, as opposed to "sharply conical" (right general shape, but flattened), and they're all a pale gold/yellow creamy colour as opposed to "brown" as the psilocybe faq describes them. Is this just local variation, or could it be a lookalike? Reassurance would be appreciated!

It's a bit early in the UK for P. semilanceata, they normally tend to fruit around mid to late September when the temps start to drop.

Amatoxin, I have picked liberty caps, only 18 on a lawn in Seattle in may back int he late 1980s and in a field in the arboretum in mid july after a short storm. It is August and their season is usally Sept to the freeze, however, it is possible that some are up now in wales, especially near coastal areas with sea spray mist along pasturelands running along the sea coast.

I mentioned the sea spray misting because ont he big island in hawaii, copes grow along coastal pasturelands and sometimes are fruiting when no rain comes but appear formthe salty sea spray mist of the waters crashing into the coastlines.

Not sure where in the poster is in Wales but even early rains in Wales could bring up a small fruiting here and there.

Of course a picture would only verify a find this early.

Remember even here in Seattle, we have picked P. fimetaria in February and march and in June months, although it too is a fall shroom in the UK.

mj

I read somewhere that they tend to appear earlier high up, starting in late July or August, then later in lower areas, and I'm finding these at 1200 ft. Early July was record-breakingly hot this year, and these mushrooms have just started appearing after quite a lot of rain over the past couple of weeks. I don't know if that makes it more likely that they are semilanceata?

I found about 20 more today that have come up over night, though more confused now as a few of them look like all the others in every respect, except that they don't have the nipple on top of the cap - just round and smooth... they look so similar it's hard to believe they're a different species, but i might chuck them anyway.

Should be able to post a photo in a few days.

From a google image search...

This is exactly what they look like! This is labeled as P. semilanceata on http://www.magic-mushrooms.net/picking.html

I can't find references anywhere to there being any lookalikes in the UK...

I do all my hunting for both edibles and Libs high up in the Peak District and I can tell you for a fact that there are none up there. This is the hottest summer on record in this country, you are not going to find any this summer!

I've been picking Libs around Wales, Somerset, Yorkshire and Derbyshire for 15 years now and they like it cold! I've seen the odd 1 or 2 in early Spring but they don't come out in any serious numbers until Autumn.

Try to peel off a translucent "skin" from the cap. If you fail to get a rubbery-textured pellicle, from a fresh specimen, then wait a month or so, and try another hunt.

I have to say that i think its far more helpful to post pictures of the ACTUAL mushroom that you found rather than doing a search on google until you find something you think is SIMILAR but is not your MUSHROOM and posting it.
Please try to post pics of the actual mushroom, and not what you think it looks like so that our identifications can be more exact and to avoid possibly dangerous confused IDs.
