Tight or loose?
    #5935132 - 08/05/06 05:43 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Long time reader first time poster. I'm incubating wbs in pint jars with a layer of tyvek under the lid and polyfil in the inoculation point of the lid. The lids are screwed on firmly. I was wondering if there is enough gas exchange. Thanks for your help.

Yeah should have no promblem with that. Just make sure to Wrap the jar with a coffe filter and aluminum foil, after you inculate. It helps keep more contamination out.

Check out www.fungifun.org/English/Pftek

Thats would I do to a "T" with some minor additions.

A coffee filter won't do diddily for filtering and the foil may block gas exchange. A coffee filter is used in place of aluminum foil during PC'ing. The reason for this is that it will catch drops of water in the PC and keep them off of the lid. It also easily evaporates the moisture once remove from the PC unlike foil that traps it to keep the filter underneath dry. It IS NOT a sufficient filter for mycological work.

I'm not saying not to use it, just not to count on it as an actual filter. You have to be very clear with most people or next thing you know, you'll have people using coffee filters in place of Tyvek and wonder why they have contams.

many people use the poly-fil without the tyvek.

many people use the tyvek without the poly-fil.

you should be fine.

however, having the tyvek under the lid means it could get wet during shaking.

the moisture could wick to the poly-fil.
contams could than wick into your jars.
bad news.

I now put the tyvek over the lid and make very small holes in the lid.
Enough for gas exchange, but not to allow grain through the lid to get to the tyvek.

no wet filter material means no wicking of contams in.

This is the right way to do it.  I take a hammer and a nail and put two small holes in the lid and put the tyvek over it.
I push a needle through one of the holes and seal the jar, then I pull the needle out and put a peice of tape over it, now you can see a little hole and know exactly where to inject.

The filter stays bone dry when it's above the lid, this justs eliminates another source of contamination. :mushroom2:

Don't sweat it. Although I wouldn't rule it out as a possibility, I've never experience the contam wicking phenomenon myself.
