The World's Worst Internet Laws Sneaking Through the Senate
August 03, 2006

[Update: The Cybercrime Treaty was ratified by the Senatelate last night. The U.S. will now have to comply to requests for assistance from fifteen countries, and growing.]

The Convention on Cybercrime is a sweeping treaty that has been waiting in the wings of the Senate for nearly three years. Now the administration is putting pressure on the Senate to ratify it in the next two days. If it does, it would mean the U.S. would enforce not just our own, but the rest of the world's bad Net laws. Call your Senator now, and ask them to hold its ratification.

The treaty requires that the U.S. government help enforce other countries' "cybercrime" laws - even if the act being prosecuted is not illegal in the United States. That means that countries that have laws limiting free speech on the Net could oblige the F.B.I. to uncover the identities of anonymous U.S. critics, or monitor their communications on behalf of foreign governments. American ISPs would be obliged to obey other jurisdiction's requests to log their users’ behavior without due process, or compensation.

The treaty came into force last year on the international front, but not in the US, where it needs to be ratified by Congress first. So far, ratification has been blocked thanks to a "hold" placed by conservative lawmakers. But Republican senators this week are now being heavily pressured by the administration to drop their objections, and let it fly.

Ratifying the Cybercrime treaty would introduce not just one bad Internet law into America's lawbooks, but invite the enforcement of all the world's worst Internet laws. Call your senators now, and tell them to hold this invasive treaty at bay.

Never say never. We have seen a lot of bad things happen during this administration. Have you forgotten The Patriot Act? And all the other fucked up things that are happening RIGHT NOW.

That law allows Americans to be punished for exercising free speech on the internet. That's going much too far even for the Bush appointee supreme court to tolerate methinks.

Make drugs legal, or alcohol and tobacco illegal. Either way it's more fair.

I hope so man, i really, really hope so!

I was talking to this guy today while I was in line at the store and he had an anti bush t-shirt. I said all we have to do is wait out this bush epidemic till hes impeached or is replaced in 2008. He said " I hope so man, i really, really hope so!" Then he started to talk about how he thinks that their will be another "terrorist" attack before a possible impeachment or next election and Bush will impliment a state of Martial Law, and after that well Bush decides what happens then.

Im not one to fall for these cheesy conspiracy theories, but I will admit there was something definately wrong with the Sept. 11th attacks, it was REALLY shady the way the gov. handled it. Things just seem to be escalating to something significant and it seems to be coming up on us with a quickness.

With the pipe in Alaska being closed indefinitely, I'll be surprised if were not going into the 2nd Great Depression. Iran is stepping up it's nuclear effort, North Korea is defying us, Isreal and Lebanon keep upping the ante. So... I really can't see any light at the end of the tunnel just yet. Things always get worse before they get better. I hate to be a doomsayer but I think things are worse than most realize.

"Just always remember the free and beautiful internet regulated by the PEOPLE"

That's the wrong attitude. We have to use our right to assemble, and at least put up a fight. They're already fighting a losing battle: the word is out. And not just on the net itself, but in every day conversations. This is no joke... We need to deliver a reminder of what "of the people, by the people, and for the people." really means.

Get involved.

Unfortunately, there are people out there that *don't* see this as a time of darkness.

Dudes, spores are not illegal to buy and sell. If that's really why you are so upset about that law, then no need to worry. Besides, it's not one of those things that will be used to monitor you when you say things like, "I have a hardon." and, "Man she's hot." It will only be used as a counter-terrorism weapon. I hope no one is against that.
