Afternoon Hike

Yesterday was really dry, despite a brief thunderstorm the day before. I did however manage to find a few mushrooms worth taking pictures of. The first mushroom is definitely the highlight for me, and I hope to go back and get a picture of it as it matures. Also, found some chanterelles, mostly faded and drying up. I wonder if these are the edible chanterelles? I didn't pick any. Plenty of amanitas, and old man of the woods, as well as a certain member of the "unicorn" group.
Pretty cool finds me thinks. Would've been better with rain though. All found in central Pennsylvania under oaks, maples, and beech.
spore prints and additional info coming soon

Nice finds and pics - I enjoy your posts.. are you in a mountainous part of PA? I'm only like 15 mins driving from the south eastern PA state line. Things have been far too hot/dry to go hunting here lately.

Yep. I'm in the central part of the state, about 2 hours north of Maryland, 2 hours east of Pittsburgh, and about 2 hours west of Harrisburg. Plenty of ridges, mountains, streams, and hollows to make things interesting.
Rain has been pretty exceptional this year. I love it, although the past week has been really hot and dry, making quality mushroom finds even harder. Then again...I got some nice shots this week of amethyst coral and I think some of yesterdays specimens were pretty nice. Most of the mushrooms are rotting, wilting, and dying right now though.
Oh well...I can't complain. I'm still getting some great finds!

Sounds good. I like areas where the elevation varies. That way things can stay moist in certain areas even when it hasn't rained in a while. Around here it is all flat. I'm not that far from the mountains though.

Yeah. I noticed that in the one hollow I hunt in, dense hemlock canopies keep things a lot wetter, for longer. It's amazing what you can find down there.
Actually...it was in that very spot that I found a log literally SMOTHERED in ramaria!
Pretty awesome stuff.

Oh my...really? They're everywhere here in central PA right now. I come across them on almost every mushroom hunt I go on!
I've yet to work up the nerve to eat one though. Old Man of the Woods looks far from appetizing. I don't even know how I would even begin to cook it!
