Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas--WTF?!

Ok my friends are kind of into drug culture and adore Hunter S. Thompson.
Most of them happen to like anything with drugs in it, but one in particular (who recommended this movie) said it was art. Since he's an intellectual/artistic I figured I'd trust his recommendation.
I was extremely underwhelmed. I felt like I was just watching 2 guys get high off random substances in secession with no real plot or point.
The only thing I saw that was worth it was they did give good adaptations to psychedelic experiences i.e. breathing textures and time lapsing; however I never saw reptilian people with blood on the floor
Overall I give this movie a 2/5.
The thing is I'm wondering if I missed anything about it? I don't hate drug movies; I like movies with strong plots that make you think.
For example. I'd give Requiem for a Dream a 6/5. So emotional. Great Plot. Awesome directing and editing.
I just don't see what it is about this that makes it a great.

Read the book.

Hah..yeah that was my 2nd thought. Perhaps it's one of those things that make no sense without a lot of the detail the origional novel provies.
The thing was he didn't read the book either so I figured the movie would suffice. Oh well. I'll put it on my reading list

The movie is almost word for word as the book. Although there are some scenes in the book not in the movie as well as some dialogue/words.
Definitely read the book...and try to forget the scenes from the movie as you read it.

I respect people's opinions; however the movie just did not have enough substance for me.
On the other hand I just watched Donnie Darko high as a kite

You have to respect the movie for what it is. Don't try to fit it into the mold of Requiem for a Dream. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is about just that, fear and loathing. It is about two guys who get a bunch of drugs, one of them cons a magazine to pay for the whole thing, something he does alot and gets paid for in the end when he turns in his "article," and go down to Las Vegas in a search for the American Dream. You have to understand where the movie is coming from, the times, the head space. It is told from the con man's perspective. You should enjoy it everytime the room service bill get too high and Duke has to beat a hasty retreat.
More over than anything, the movie is comedy. And if you don't get that, a couple of nights out on the town twisted on drugs should instill a love in you for it.

^^^^ yes yes yes, read the good doctor's works
i liked requiem, but my only problem with the movie was that the title, and the tone of the movie completely gave the ending away, imean, you _had_ to know they were fuckkked, at least halfway through. moral of the story, i guess was dont shoot cocaine?

My favorite scene is from the Deleted Scenes on the DVD...where they are talking to that agent at the table by the bar, telling him about the drug users out West...hahahah. Fucking gold.

I love the movie, and the book. Of course the book is better, but I really dont think F&LinLV is HST's best book. Maybe not even one of his better ones...
Notes of the Doomed is better...The Rum Diary is FAR superior. The Rum Diary is probably one of my favorite books ever, and I read ALOT of books. ALOT.
If you read the book though, it does give you alot more context as to what the fuck is going on. You realize they arent just out to do a bunch of drugs, they're looking for something. It works on a few levels.

The thing that kept me intrigued was the fact that it is a true story, or at least Thompson's interpretation of what happened.

go watch "Where the Buffalo Roam", it is a better depiction of Hunter S. Thompson. Plus Bill Murray is a better actor, even though F&L had Benicio Del Toro..... where the buffalo roam has a much better plot.

Where the Buffalo Roam is such a horrible movie...
I cant even sit through it. Even Thompson hated the movie. He refused to have anything to do with it.
Johnny Depp was VERY good friends with HST. They hung out all the time, and Johnny lived with him for several months to pick up his mannerisms for the movie. Plus, Hunter was involved in every step of the making of F&L.
Depp is playing Thompson in The Rum Diary, which is starting shooting any day now...

You wanna read Hunter's best read "Hell's Angels", "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail", and "Better Than Sex". Anybody who thinks that what he writes is non-fiction is dumber than a bag of hammers.

Fear and Loathing on the Campaign trail is a very good book, the best HST book I've read. As far as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, I love the book and the movie.
