Hey, this is an old one. Anyway, just wanted to point out that I did a pictorial on this and it's posted here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...rue#Post2092503 Maybe that will help, especially if people may be unsure about it.
Sorry to hear you had problems greghimself, I've never heard of that happening. I'm glad you weren't injured.

Agars Bulk Pasteurization post is similar idea... and is worth a link I think for those without a Hot Water heater. It seems he may have gotten the idea from this actually since I see him up there back in 02 commenting. Interesting but with an apartment with no water heater I'll be going with this:

I just did a similar thing in a bathtub, no garbage can. I didn't even turn up the hot water heater, just kept adding boiling water.
-------------------- And I said, I don't care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I'm, I'm quitting, I'm going to quit. And, and I told Don too, because they've moved my desk ...four times already this year and I used to be over by the window and I could see the squirrels, and they were merry, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and its not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire.

I live in an apartment but it seems that all of these have their own individual water heaters. Out on the porch. What is even better, there is simply a dial on the front of the water heater that allows you to turn up the heat. Mine goes up to about 170 it would seem. Thanks alot mycofile, you just saved me alot of energy in boiling water.

just out of curiosity, how do rationalise that less energy is used to heat water in a water heater as opposed to heating on the stove? i'm sure there are differences but I can't see them being significant.

The tank in the water heater is insulated. The pot on the stove isn't. But no, not a lot of difference.
I wouldn't turn a water heater up to 160. Too much chance of someone getting hurt. Also an older unit might not like the added strain. You might end up buying a new one. JMO

Not if you RENT an apartment
Just a note on efficency, it's not just about the energy and insulation, for me it was also about time, volume and equipment. Just try heating 40 gallons of water on the stove Using a 20 qt pot and you'll realize the efficency of the hotwater heater.
