drunk driving cost me about $4000, a car, and a student visa to university of british columbia.
thankfully it didn't make me a murderer.

And if you can spring the cash for the beers, you can probably afford to take a cab if you really too far. But when you are drunk a walk can be interesting and even fun!

I love drunk wandering... It's too bad the police made that a crime too
public intoxication is the best kind of intoxication...Drunk & Disorderly... is there any other kind?
dude, if a cop stopped me for walking home drunk, I would simply tell him, "well ofimacer, I could have drove my car home? Would that have been the smerter way to be?" And if he did not give me a ride home after that, then I would still be walking drunkenly! haha

I like Austin. I see people wandering around drunk all the time. Nobody seems to care.
I like wandering around town when I'm tripping. It's entertaining to say the least. A few weeks ago I did some shopping while tripping on 3 hits of acid. HEB was fucking crazy.

Like I said in the other thread, I've driven while high before. But it gets to my head so I haven't done it in months.
Now if I'm high but need to go somewhere, I ride my bike.

Exactly !
I'd never get in a car with a pissed driver, if you die it's your own stupid fault.
We used to drive a long way to get to clubs and back, for some reason i felt alot safer if the drunk driver dosed a pill before setting off. I don't know if i was right to feel safer or not.

Not only is it safer for everyone else on the road...but you get some good exercise, save on gas money, and help reduce pollution too!

I can honestly say I've never drove under the influence of alcohol or psychadelics, none at all, it's not safe for me or other drivers. I've driven stoned, but I wouldn't ever again.
I don't drive now, so it's easy to avoid.
I have taken a couple pretty serious crashes while drunk on my bike or walking. Scrapes and scratches, didn't kill anyone.

I'm not gonna read all these replies but I'd like to say a big FUCK YOU to anyone who drives impaired, for whatever reason. Whether it's alcohol or some other drug, lack of sleep or whatever. If you can't operate your car safely than you're being a sack of shit for climbing behind the wheel. I've lost friends to drunk drivers and the offenders have all been repeat DUI's. I really think the first DUI should be a year suspension of the license + 2 weeks in jail + community service and scale up fast from there. If you manage to get a 3rd DUI you should go to prison for a couple years in my opinion. It's reckless, heartless, stupid and should be punished accordingly.

Bullshit. You have a choice. It's between an inconvenience for you which is probably partly your fault anyway or the possible death or serious injury to yourself and others. That's a no brainer to the point of not even being a choice if you're even a half decent person.

It sucks my friend got busted for a DUI while driving like 1/4 of a mile home after drinking 2 beers.
thats just such bs.

I've driven a lot with beer buzzes.. I don't drive after being totally wasted or whatever.
in some cases it actually improves driving (of course I'm talking about mild beer buzz here). I've always been confident and very coordinated anyways, no matter what.

Well answer me this, Mr. Omnipotent: Suppose you're at a party and have been drinking and smoking. You plan on staying for a while, but suddenly a your even more drunk friend ends up getting his ass kicked. You don't have much experience fighting, and there's too many of them anyway. Do you (a) sit there and let him take the punches, or (b) get him in the car and drive him the fuck out of there?

I'd say A...because my "friend" probably deserved the ass-kicking he got. People rarely gang up on a drunk guy without a solid reason for doing so. If a friend of mine gets himself into that kind of situation...well I'm sorry but it's his own damn fault, and that's not enough reason for me to get behind the wheel after I've been drinking.

Fuck, I'd hate to be your friend. He got enough punches in already to get what he deserved. I didn't want to see the guy get a concussion.

Well obviously I'd do my best to stop him from getting beat silly...but I'm still not going to put myself, him, and everyone else on the road in danger just to do so!
I mean, how shitty would it be that in trying to "save" your friend...you actually get into a wreck and kill him?
You can hate to be my friend if you want...I tend not to hang around with people who turn into drunk assholes at parties anyway (not you, your friend).

I think you guys are overstating just much danger you're putting people into by getting behind the wheel. It depends on how drunk you are. It's not like I was plastered or anything. And I just got far away enough to get him out of harm's way.

I don't think anyone is overstating it...because there is no true set "limit" to what EVERY person will take before they become dangerous. Some people are dangerous on the road without any alcohol at all. Some people are dangerous after one beer...and some others probably aren't dangerous after 10 beers. It's just too variable to call any set limit.
However a century of evidence STILL remains which indicates that ANY amount of alcohol will have a detrimental affect on driving abilities - how much the abilities are impaired depends on the individual in question and the circumstances...but the facts stand that alcohol decreases motor skills.

Exactly. Everyone's different. And if someone's been drinking and doing drugs for a while, they know what their limits are.

Yes, and so does drowsiness, but I still have to go home at night. I just don't think that a small reduction in motor skills is worth the violently hostile reaction I'm getting from some people:
"Fuck you! You had a beer and got behind the wheel! I hope you die motherfucker!"
Seems a bit excessive to me.

"Fuck you! You had a beer and got behind the wheel! I hope you die motherfucker!"
Did someone really say that in here? Point me to their post! They shouldn't be posting in The Pub at all if they can't keep it civil!
You'll never catch me saying that. I'm trying to prevent needless deaths from occuring...so I'm sure as hell not going to wish death on anyone in the process!
People make mistakes. It's part of being human. I only hope that people can learn from those mistakes instead of trying to rationalize them with talk like "well I drove slow and I only had three blocks to go". That's not learning...that's making excuses.

It's not a direct quote, but it typifies the response of many people here(their replies are not directed at anyone in particular, it doesn't technically count as flaming). The point is that people act like you have to be a total scumbag to get behind the wheel if you're even slightly impaired. But I say that unless you're a racecar driver or are driving in heavy traffic, you don't need your motor skills to be in top shape.
