I know someone who has this problem. They make up shit sometimes out of nowhere for no reason .... It does go a little deeper than that though. My questions to you are. Have you ever known someone who was like this and got over it? Why are people compulsive lier's in the first place? If there is a way they can stop doing it... what are the steps? The person I am talking about knows they are doing it and they admit it to me. They keep telling me they need help and I cant do anything for them. All I can tell them is I really cant help that they have to make the choice them self.

I've run into a few like that. I tend to avoid them where ever possible. As for help for them, I don't know. Maybe there's some kind of psychotherapy for them...?

Try to help when you can. Set an example and be honest with him. Give him good advice. Be his friend, even. Just realize - you cannot trust him. Let him know that. Tell him the only way you can trust him is if he proves himself worthy of your respect over time.

sit them down and play a game of truth or truth.
say some humiliating and personal things you have done, then its their turn. repeat.

Once compulsive always compulsive.
Unless it is sorted quickly when they are young.
Liers enjoy being one up on you. They construct the version of reality for you because they can control your thinking this way.
When it becomes compulsive its almost automatic. They will tend to lie as often as possible under the belief that it will be more beneficial for them to control others thoughts.
When its automatic it also becomes rediculous as you will find these types of people lying about the most stupid things that theres no reason to even lie about.

Tell them to become a fiction writer and get rich from their talent
And this goes not compute " Once a ....Always a ...... " That is just a sad excuse for someone who can't understand what is happing......people change all the time.
Tell your friend this........."if you really want change you must admit every lie as it happens.........after awhile you will stop"
But real change takes balls and bravery
And if you are a real friend you will be aware of his stupid habits and love him anyway.

Compulsive lying is caused by a person's inability to cope with the harsh reality of the world. They feel unimportant and insignifigant in the world, and seek to stand out by making up stories which portray them in a very good light. Some compulsive liars lie because they feel their lives haven't been as exciting as the people around them and seek to "one up" them. Compulsive lying often occurs when a person has no slef-indentity. The only way to help is to be patient with them and tell them straight up when you know their lying - but DO NOT YELL. Compulsive lying is a diagonosed metal illness and yelling only serves in making the person defensive and volitile.
