Large hunt with photos...mmm *Updated with prints*
    #5929236 - 08/03/06 05:36 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Location: Southern Ontario, 40 minutes southwest of toronto.

So, this evening, i went out in the rain in search of some mushrooms...

..these are some of the cool ones..

And, now time for some ID fun..

I found these two growing on horse dung, there seemed to be lots of pins too  the sporeprint is black.

I found this large one growing on another pile of horse dung in the same field, although it looks promising, it doesnt match anything that should be growing in southern ontario...it also has a black spore print. Anyways, any help would be awesome. Oh, and they don't bruise blue, and the stem on the large one is hallow. If you need a picture of the print, let me know and ill post it.

:UPDATE:

These are some prints, and i threw in the Amanita..just becuase.

Thanks.

No bruising. And yes, some sort of Pan. for sure. Which is pretty cool, gives me hope, haha. i saw a lot of pins, so in a few days ill go back and check things out, maybe get a few more specimens.

Ill take a photo of the sporeprint soon, when it's done.

Well, i ate pretty much all of them, 24 mushrooms in total, hoping for something..anything. and i feel really sick, and my bowels are making strange noises. i hope the trip starts soon!

But seriously, no, non of them are active, well, maybe the ones that i printed, im still waiting on someone to ID them.

p.s. We have a mushroom farm close to here, and i can see that they have piles and piles of manure and rotting hay around back, but it's a pretty big complex, and it would be risky. Any suggestions on being stealth?

Well, Pan. subbalteatus is referred to as a "weed mushroom", because it likes to pop up in mushroom farms, all over the country. You might have some luck with those, if the people who run the farm don't weed them out.

Later. Good luck.

Really great pictures, well done. The yellow amanita appears to be Amanita muscaria var. formosa. You can see the concentric rings at the base. The picture after that looks to be one of the destroying angels, deadly! You also have lots of Russulas in there, and maybe some poisonous lepiotas. Those pans don't look like pan subbs to me, more like one of the many inactive pans. Still a nice find though. None of the others are active, some are quite poisonous, and some I'm not sure what they are from the pics alone. In any case, great job and great photos. Keep sharing!

yeah, i took photos in the storm, it was wild, do you have msn?

p.s. I just went for a night hunt. It was horrible, i tried to park near the mushroom farm, out in the middle of nowhere, but i was unprepared, it's totally an intense opperation, security, consequences. I'll need to consult google maps, and plan hardcore.

Other spots i check out were way too dark, i have concluded that mushroom hunting at night is a horrible idea, and much too scary for a solo mission, haha.

The horse dung mushrooms are likely Paneaolus antillarum and not active. I almost pooped my pants when you said you ate them all. I'm glad you were joking.

Nice pics
Yeah, those are Pan. antillarum sp., frustrating they are a close cousin to the blue meanie
Night hunts are not the best time to hunt, but will provide some stealth. If you think thats an envigorating experience, imagine what it's like when you got all kinds of livestock lumberin around that you can't see  I don't like to be out there at night either :smirk:
