Louisiana Cubensis finds 8/1/06 and help ID on finds on 7/30/06
    #5926641 - 08/02/06 07:53 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys. Me and a few friends went shrooming last night finding some pretty big Cubensis.

Here is the first half of the harvest.

Here is the rest of the guys.

Here are the two big ones one of my friends found.

Here are two beautiful ones another guy found.

Unfortantly I didn't have enough space left to show you guys the intense and beautiful bluing these guys put off. In the pictures you can't see it, because we handle them with such care. After the pictures we did a good pinch on all the mushrooms and saw amazing bluing.

One last thing. 2 nights before this hunt, we went hunting at the same field and found these shrooms I'm about to show. I didn't have my camera's memory stick at the time so I couldn't take fresh pictures for better identificaiton. However, when fresh all of these mushrooms looked just like those, orangish color going to whitish. Nice bluing on all of them. Here they are, just imagine these looking like the ones above. Would you say these are dried Cubensis?

Alright guys, well I hope you guys enjoyed our first finds. The first night we found a bit more, but smaller, the second time around we found less but much more mature and larger. Thanks!!!

congrats on the cube finds! nice looking fruits you harvested there

as for the mush at the very bottom.... I would say those are your classic sun dried cubes- with the obvious blue staining on some of the stems/ caps

how much rain did it take for you to find those?

Well lately in Southeast LA (about 20 miles from Baton Rouge) it's been raining just about every day for a month or two, but only for an hour at most. Around 3-5pm it'll rain hard then stop. The day we found these it rained hard for 30min - an hour the day before and then got a good day of sunshine. I'd say that's the best time to find these massive fruits (not saying their the biggest and surely not saying I'm an expert.) after a good day of rain and a good sunshiny day to provoke the growth.

Unfortunately I've recently saw some pictures of Copes and we had a decent amount of those, but were unsure and threw them out. But I think we played it safe, throwing out mushrooms that look suspicious past our knowledge. It's cool to know the field we go to is big, safe, and has 2 species of actives in there. We spent about 2 hours out in the field with little distraction.

We found some stunningly similar mushrooms to Cubensis in the fields (about 3-4 total) but threw them out due to absolutely no bluing whatsoever and solid white gills. So a little tip for you first-timers like us, remember just because they look like a cube in a picture doesn't necessarily mean they are. My friend had a good saying when we were out there "When in doubt, throw it out." There are some posers out there, and I wouldn't doubt those were poisonous little bastards. From what we saw the 2 times we visited this place is that there were probably 5 to 6 mushroom species there alone (from what we saw that is.) We'd find some huge mushrooms, but they had an odd look and very spongey under the gills.

Anyways thanks for the thanks!!

Probably an agaricus or lepiota, find those a lot down here...nice finds, it has been perfect weather. A lot of massive fruits out there.

The common green gilled lepiota.Heard it makes you very sick.

Those copenlandia's will turn blue quikly with no mistake.
We used to carry around an extra paper bag for suspeted Cyans and throw them in there. And check them every so often while in the field if we could.

Another word of advice, if you want your field to keep producing don't focus on thumping the cap. That is a huge miscoception in south Louisiana as well as other places.
Try cutting the fungus out of the patty rather than pulling out roots and all. Doing so will not disrupt the mycelial network and the area will more likly continue producing.
