Surprising Results from a Test!

The two jars on the left were innoc'd on 3-22. The two jars on the right were innoc'd on 3-23 Today is 3-29 They are all BRF and innoc'd from the same hawaiian syringe. Anyone want to guess what I did differently? I think I'll tell you tomorrow. Unless this thread hopelessly sinks. Free Spore Ring

If it's the same substarte and same syringe........ I would guess that you kept the ones on the right @ higher temps..... Did I win...?

Sloluva, Because you love suspense. And to see if anybody cares. No polyfill, metal lids taped. (I haven't took the tape off yet) Jesse, nope, they sat side by side in the incubator. Anybody else? Free Spore Ring

looks like you mighta sucked up some dextrose water into your syringe after the first innoculation, or honey water , something along those lines

Did you inject more into the ones on the right? I know when I injected more than 1cc in one and less than .5cc in the other the one with more than 1cc took off like crazy, more than double the speed.

The first thing you must learn in cultivating mushrooms is patience. Ok let me find the thread that gave me the crazy idea, and I'll bump it. It will take a few minutes, so be patient.

so let me get this straight. you add your water to your brf after you steralize? and you add this steralized water by injecting it through your 4 inoculation holes? wouldn't this cause contamination problems...i mean, it would distribut the spores much better, but it wouldn't distribut the water content evenly??? is any of this making sense? did i read that right?

Pennywise wins, I injected more solution. All of the water as a matter of fact. I mixed up my brf and verm dry. And PC'd them dry. Then I took the water that I would have mixed, and mixed it with the spores(after I boiled and cooled it of course), then injected 12 cc's into each hole. Half toward the glass and half toward the center. So If you're innoculating tonight, it may be too late for you to try this. Sorry. It has also occured to me that it may work to bake the dry jars to steralize. This could help those of you without a PC. Just an idea. I didn't expect this to work as well as it did. And I don't reccomend straying from the PF Tek, unless you're willing to accept total loss once in a while. But this time it seems to have worked. Pennywise, I owe you a prize. I have a nice hawaiian print for you if you want it. Hope that helps you guys! Never Stop Learning! Free Spore Ring

what about the water consitancy in your jars tho... you may have problems with fruiting...i hope not tho...its a great idea. I was think about somthing along the lines of this the other day. Instead of mixing spores with water, inoculate a mass amount of honey water and when you want to inoculate your jars (steralized dry, like you did) just take the lids off and pour a crap load of it in...you wouldn't need to worry about contamination because you would be putting so much mycel. into the jars there would be no compitiion for other bacteria. just a thought hey. you wanna send me a print to!

Thanks Anno, I had a feeling this would lead to baking. I guess it already has. Man, you already know all this shit don't you dude. So why isn't it mentioned much? That to me is an indicator that it might not be as failsafe as the PF Tek. I have a feeling I'm going to find out in the coming weeks. A few points I thought I should mention: 1)After you inject the water, you shake the jars. 2)The mycelia is not pulled back off the glass like it normally is when a cake is covered. 3)I only risked 4 jars to try this. 2 with metal lids, 2 with tyvex.(exact same results) I hope bringing this method up doesn't cause a bunch of confusion in the future, But it probably will. Just trying to help. Free Spore Ring

Four jars were taken and cased into a half gallon juice box: 2" damp verm, 4"substrate, 1" damp verm on top. This pic was taken on 4-19 (27 days after innoculation) Not bad huh? Free Spore Ring

did you just crumble the cakes over the 1st layer, let them colonize a bit, then cover with the third layer?

"did you just crumble the cakes over the 1st layer, let them colonize a bit, then cover with the third layer? " No, Since I wasn't spawning more substrate, it only had to recover(grow back together), and did it relatively fast. I added the damp verm, then crumbled the cakes, pressed lightly to even it up, Then immediately covered loosely with with damp verm (no packing at all!). Back to the incubator for 2-3 days, About three spots the size of a dime were spotted, so it was removed, and placed in a high humidity terrarium (for cakes) until pinning occured. It was then placed on the perlite (in the pic) with a clear cover similar to one of those bottled water fountain bottles ( I don't know what they're called) , and fanned three times a day. The second flush is about an inch tall right now. I wish I had of put it back in the other terrarium to induce a second pinset. I think it would be further along now if I had. Hope that helps. Cool Experiment, but why did you mix your controls? That last pic is all four jars right, or am I missing something? Seems like a waste of an experiment to me. Besides for that it was a real cool idea, even if it has been thought of before. New spins on old ideas and simple shit that makes you go "why has no one thought of that before?" keep this hobby evolving.... You should have fruited the jars seperately to discover the effect of water content and distribution on pinset, flush potential, .etc. Maybe I'll get off my lazy ass and do it...or maybe not. Nice try though man! Keep up the cool ideas and make a breakthrough. A huge one is right around the corner.... I CAN FEEL IT

You're right man, mixing the controls would have been a bad idea. Not that it wouldn't work, but it would have told me less. I didn't. I just didn't mention that I had tried this on four jars. And Hippie, I wondered about that myself. So the next four, I birthed as cakes. You know how a lot of times The shrooms on a cake seems to concentrate in little areas? Well these didn't. They grew like tiny hairs all over. Then about the time the veils dropped(largest cap was about3/4"), 3 of 4 cakes simultaniously contaminated. So fruit and cakes were tossed. I'm still kinda wondering about that one. I think I might have birthed them too soon. And the more aggressive mycelia didn't have time to dominate the less aggressive due to such even spore distribution. But that's just my guess. Hell I'm still learning. Have been all my life. Thanks for everyone's input. I never thought this thread would live this long. Free Spore Ring
