Identification Help
    #5928984 - 08/03/06 03:55 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Species #1: I am pretty sure this is A. Muscaria, but this is my first time picking anything, so I wanted to make sure.

Habitat: Grassy yard
Gills: The colour is mostly white and light tan.
Stem: Has remnants of the universal veil on it.
Cap: Smooth, yellowish orange around the outside with white bits, the center is reddish orange.
Spore Print Color: I accidently washed it before taking a spore print, but I can see little white traces on the paper.
Brusing: None
Location: Alaska

Species #2: Maybe P. Cyanescens??

Habitat: Within several feet of Species #1
Gills: White/cream-coloured.
Stem: Hollow
Cap: Light tan in the center, dark tan around.  Very curvy.
Spore Print color: Same problem as with Species #1, can't see any color though :frown:
Bruising: None, although I only touched it a little while ago.
Location: Alaska.

Hi Pilgrym,

Decent descriptions but I would say that both of your guesses are not on the money.

1) The top mushroom should be an Amanita but it is missing the distinguishing warts on the cap typical of a muscaria and varients thereof. Also the most distinguishing feature aside from over all appearance would be the base of the mushroom with the concentric rings being visible.

2) The second photo is not near a cyanescens. The gills are white and probably drop a white spore print. The stem is brown. The gills are decurrent. At least I think they are gills.

hmmm the first looks like the edible Amanita Caesarea, or Caesers Amanita, but those grow eastern and southwestern north america, and you found this in alaska. they grow with oak trees. find any of those? or are you too far north?

i used to live in fairbanks.....miss it alot.

baycafe, if you look in the second picture you can see warts around the edge of the cap.
nobhdy, nope there aren't any oak trees around.

Also, I just found this in some garden soil by birch trees.

Habitat: Garden soil by some birch trees.
Gills: The colour is mostly white and light tan. Not attached.
Stem: Has remnants of the universal veil on it and basal bulb.
Cap: Smooth with white warts, reddish orange center, and yellowish orange around the outside.
Spore Print Color: White
Brusing: Slightly yellowish on the stem.
Location: Alaska

I agree that your first Amanitas look like something in the Caesars amanita complex. Definitely not muscaria. The second photo is not P cyanescens. Cyans have light colored stems for one thing, and there are many other differences as well. The next mush you show is also another amanita, but doesn't look like muscaria. The base of the stem does not look like it has the characteristic shaggy concentric rings at the base. You should consider all amanitas poisonous until you become more skilled at identifying them.

Nice pictures and descriptions though. Keep hunting!

Agreed, Eating amanita's is defintely not worth the risk of ruining your liver, stick to better edibles.
