Social Hierarchy
    #5926821 - 08/02/06 08:54 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Do we employ a social hierarchy in dealing with each other because it is necessary in order to properly function as a society, or is it simply something that has worked because we have made it work, and that there are more beneficial, effective ways of acting as a society that we could utilize?

I think this hierarchy results from responsibility. We specialize responsibility, and it seems to work. At work, my associate is responsible for aspects of the processes of my departments, and I am responsible for my entire department and my associate. My assistant manager is responsible for my department, my associate, myself, a few other departments and their associates, as well as other managerial responsibilities. My co-manager is responsible for all of those departments, associates, and assistant managers on one side of the store, etc. etc. etc.

It works the same way in friendships and  families, in government, etc. etc. etc., in any aspect of society. I think that it works well when everyone involved assumes their responsibility. We all play out different roles naturally through our interactions as a society (and, of course, we are free to assume different roles and different responsibilities). Any failure on this system is the result of lack of awareness and lack of assuming responsibility, in my opinion.

What do you all think?

I don't know if I'd say that a hierarchy such as the one we use is absolutely necessary. We could probably survive without it. It has made things easier though.

However, a significant problem is that most people are either unaware of abstract nature of the hierarchy or otherwise believe that the hierarchy represents some factual truth, for instance that I am actually better than you because I have a higher position in a company. Or that because you are high up in the government, you are somehow better and more deserving than others.

With a higher rank in the social hierarchy, comes greater responsibilites and greater power. When people start taking this for granted and start truly identifying with their role in the social game, then problems can start to arise, and generally do arise.
