http://utorrent.com/
download, install
open "torrents" that you download from sites such as mininova.org, thepiratebay.org, torrentspy.org
these connect you to people's computers, to certain directories, and you download whatever the torrent is for
music, pr0n, movies, games, it's a magical world
if you need help, ask odiumjunkie
i didn't like soulseek, personally

Soulseek has many hard to find tracks that you simply won't find on any other p2p network.

As everyone else has said, BitTorrent. Usenet is awesome too but you have to pay for an account. Finally, DC++ is where I turn when I can't find a file anywhere else.

Soulseek is brilliant. It sucks ass to start with, but as soon as you get talking to people and you get added to their lists your sorted.
slsk is a haven for psy & psydub/ambient chill .. has plenty of dubs for us dnb junkies (that is if you've got shit to trade).
As soon as you've built up a decent library of music, slsk becomes much easier to use as people will add you to their lists so you get much faster speeds

I always use lime wire even though it does completely ruin the computer. All I have to do is reformat the computer and its good as new again and that only takes like a half hour so sometimes I think its worth it as long as I was able to get allot of stuff before it freezes.I wish I could figure out all the torrent sites, every time I try they I get a ton of stuff and when I go to watch it,I can never find the file extension I need to play it

As far as torrents are concerned, have you tried Oink's Pink Palace?
http://oink.me.uk
I know it sounds little fruity, but its simply the best site out there for music...
Its invite only, but people have invites to spare... In fact, I got my invite through a post here in the pub... I'm sure if you let people know you need one, someone is sure to hook you up..

All you really need is ffdshow and xvid codec, It's hardly rocket science.
If you use Gspot it will tell you precisely what codecs you need to play the file.

Join the shroomery room! Just scroll to the bottom of the list and we should be there. If you don't see it, right click in the rooms window and select "create room". Type in "Shroomery". When you are in the room, right click in the chat area and select "toggle room autojoin". This will log you in automatically when you start soulseek.

Soul Seek for music is great. You need to do some reading to set it up. Its a community and people can be bitchy about alot of things.
Also like others have said Onik is great for music. Its a private community you will need an invite. I have some. If you take the time to learn bit torrent and your mom will let you be a seeder as long as you can. Im willing to throw an invite your way.
If you want to learn about p2p and need guides check out
www.slyck.com
They have pleanty of guides there. The fourms have great information. I suggest you start there. Do yourself a favor and learn several forms of P2P. If you do you will always find what you want when ever you want.

I used to download songs with kazaa, then I downloaded albums with IRC, now I download entire artist's discographies with bittorrent. I love technology . I guess the next step is to download all of 'Rock'. heh.
Honestly, there's NO need to pay for anything (and if you pay, it's either crap or WAY expensive to get a decent amount of songs). Your options are either don't pay a cent and find a good way to download, or to pay, but pay out the ass for not as much. Like I said, bittorrent is the easiest/fastest way to do it. I can literally start downloading everything 5 different artists have ever made in the amount of time i can hold my breath, probably more artists. That, and the only thing limiting how fast I download is my own download bandwidth, not some server's. Rant rant, blah blah.
BitTorrent forever (or whatever's next)!!

VLC player will play basically any file, including incomplete and corrupted ones, i just do not like its control panel, i use zoom player and installed the CCCP just run the insurgent prior to installing. i rarely ever get a file that i cannot play with that codec pack on zoom, and when i occasionally do, VLC will play it.

soulseek is incredible for music. usually organized as full albums, properly labeled, usually ripped at higher bitrate than stuff elsewhere, no junk files or viruses. i don't know what i did before it. i could never use limewire again.
for everything else, i use bit torrent.
soon i'm going to see what this usenet is about.

Usenet and Newsgroups are fucking great. By far the fastest way to get media. I highly recommend figuring it out. You will be Glad you did. The easy way to go is to learn newsbinz. They are simple like a torrent.
here is a guide for you. http://www.slyck.com/ng.php
For those of you with codex problems and are looking for answers. Here is an all in one codex pack that will install everything you need and you will be able to play whatever you like on your computer. http://www.filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/
It has G-spot, ffdshow, and any essential codex and codex tool. Do yourself a favor and install it.

avoid limewire and kazaa. for real. it's not 2001 anymore.
decent p2p:
soulseek (nicotine on linux and soulseeX on mac) emule (amule on linux and mac) bittorrent (oink and demonoid are great trackers) dc++ (get invited to a private hub and you'll get everything you need)
oh, and, all you nicotine users (all 3 of you), you should update to nicotine+ - way more stable than previous versions: http://thegraveyard.org/daelstorm/nicotine-patch.php

spyware? no.
just be careful of what you download. I recommend blocking files that end with the extensions of .exe, .dll, .zip, .bat, etc. soulseek windows client should ban these by default. and you should "allow extensions" on windows always (I dont know why microsoft defaults with hiding extensions - that is just retarded - but it is microsoft).

no adware.
be sure your soulseek client is banning those extensions and you'll be fine.
