PF Tek cakes - blueing, drying out?
    #5924688 - 08/02/06 08:05 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I birthed some PF cakes about 7 days ago and have been hoping to see some pins any day now (not that I really know what they look like). I'm starting to notice some blueing at the very tips of some outward growing mycelium strands, as well as small dots of blue at different places on the cake. Is the cake drying out or is this a legitimate precursor to pinning? There is no foul odor at all - the cakes still smell distinctly mushroomy.

I've been having a hell of a time trying to get an accurate reading on the humidity level in my terrarium. But I'm using Perlite to humidify and have occasionally sprayed the sides of the case. I did not dunk and roll prior to placing in the terrarium. I held off because there are so many varied opinions as to whether or not it's needed for cubes and I didn't want to complicate things.

I'll try and post a pic later but if any one has any feedback I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

follow up:

Actually, now I wonder if it's blueing because I handled it. I took it out of the chamber to get a closer look for pins, brushed a little of the verm off the top and touched the cake only slightly but I'm getting the impression that that can trigger blueing.

If so, can I just leave the cake alone and still expect it to pin and fruit?

Yes. Cakes are easily bruised. They will recover and be fine.
