And the answer is coldness... Especially with microwaved casing mix... it'll be really hot in some places, and warm in others...
And yami, you need to get on the miracle grow band wagon... come on man, you know you want to :P

for a casing mix? technically it should be pasteurized. you can sterilize. you can also nuke in the microwave. there's lots of threads aruing the reasons and merits of each. pasteurization is really the by-the-book way. (i do microwave. 2-3 minutes on, wait 15, 2-3 more minutes, wait 15 more, finally 3 more minutes)... whatever you do to it, let it sit a while til its totally cool. dont take risks, let things cool.

kind of, there has been small debates on nuking lately. Some claim it's not effective as pasturization goes because it can get to hot, but it's not a true sterilization either IMO. PC'ing is the only true sterilization (aside from autoclaving)

nuking is ghetto half ass pasteurizing. because microwaves do heat so unevenly, some areas will approach sterile. its all good in the end though... works out and is so much easier than monitoring temps and holding it at just the right temperature for a length of time and all that... thats the deal with the wait between nukes, to get the temp up and keep it up, the goal of pasteurization is a reduction to near elimination of spore contam load while allowing a small amount of bacteria to survive. microwaving, you probably miss some of the spore load, and probably end up hurting more of the bacteria than you meant to... but it balances back out and has never failed me.
