they definitely glowed... had a paper bag with a few specimens in it, and just peaked in it and I didn't even have to let my eyes adjust... they glowed... unfortunately where that patch is it will never be complete darkness... it is on the edge of a large lake, and moonlight is as bright as the sun...

Thats fairly nasty Jim. I still don't understand why people enjoy the rubbery texture of Boletus / Suillus. Fairly soon people are going to start selling tires in the market as a synthetic substitute.

Since when has Boletus edulis had a rubbery texture???
I'd understand if you were talking about wood ears (Auricularia auricula) or Shiitake being rubbery but Porcini...

Amatoxin,
I don't recall ever eating porcini and I should before I make general assumptions. I am not even sure the type of boletus I had though I didn't care for it much (French joint). Send me an edilus I can reconstitute / prepare and I may revise my statement .

I agree with you about the texture of Suillus. About the only way they become OK is if you cook them until they become crunchy.
Boletus edulis can also develop a somewhat slimy texture, but not nearly like a Suillus.
The biggest difference between them is flavor. B. edulis has a definite strong, pleasant flavor, and Suillus are pretty much lacking in any significant flavor.
If textures like those bother you, don't try eating food like some Japanese actually eat (my wife is Japanese). They eat some things that have texture like snot, far worse than any Suillus ever was.
Happy mushrooming!

The Chinese too!
First off, I hate Shiitake simply because I can't chew it up, no matter how much time I spend chewing, it stays virtually intact!! Yuck!!
When I was in China, my escorts had to drag me away from just about every street vendor... They said I would get food poisoning from the street vendor food. There was however ONE thing I was not interested in imbibing. That was tripe. I said, I can well imagine the texture of beef stomach, and was unwilling to partake. After 10 min of reasoning with my escorts, the waitress came up, and took the order from our escorts who spoke in Chinese. Sure enough, when the meal arrived, there was a heaping plate of beef stomach, and I ended up trying it after much resistance. I spit it out and said "That is EXACTLY what I figured tripe to taste like!!!" Like a rubber band with rubber hairs sticking out the sides.

Well I think Shiitake is good. Maybe you didn't have it cooked right or something.
Always cooked it up myself. Harvested them from my indoor shiitake block. The way I fix it, it has a very similar texture to Agaricus.

Eris, I have eaten (or tried to) Shiitake prepared many different ways, many different times. Dried, dried and reconstituted, fresh, sauteed, boiled, you name it. And no matter how long or hard i chew, I can't seem to break it up into manageable pieces. It's just too leathery. Hmmm, it's weird that your experience has varied so starkly, I can't imagine a Shiitake with a texture anywhere similar to that of a Champignon. I like Agaricus, I find the texture very nice.
Amatoxin, This is the definition I retrieved off of the internet:
Tripe - The rubbery lining of the stomach of cattle or other ruminants, used as food.
I wonder why the casual defintion is different in the UK.

What are the "sticky bun" mushrooms that I would find here in NZ? Obviously some sort of boletus, brown cap, yellow pores, grow in dense clusters and are very squat to the ground, you normally can't see their stems. They have white flesh and were found everywhere in a pine plantation. They kinda smelled faintly asweet.
Sound like B. Suillus? They had a very mild taste when eaten raw.

No such thing as Boletus suillus, Suillus is the genus. From the habitat it sounds like it could be some form of Suillus though. I don't like them, very slimy

I never even bothered with them either. For some reason just holding them in my hand turned me off from the idea.

I've only tried the Slippery Jack (Suillus luteus) which is supposedly one of the better tasting ones. I shant bother with that genus again.

Boletes of any genus freak me out. If I happened upon a fine edible specimen, my aversion might shift, but all the boletes i find are infested with critters.
slimy Suillus? Forget it!

Some are really good - Suillus don't look to be though lol.
I've been told to wipe the slimy layer off with a paper towel - perhaps that would help.
