anyone else think that this current heat wave may be earths way of returning the population to equilibrium. i know its not the most humanistic friendly concept, however i am reminded of this differential equation where if the population is over a limit it decreases to the limit and if its above it, it increases to it. i cant remember what its called, all i remember is the guy studied like the population of some birds or something. either way i kinda just think this time might be that, we have reached a max population limit and it needs to fluctuate back to equilibrium. in essense this heat is the earths way of population control i guess you could say. any thoughts?

Well, Global warming def has something to do with it. And since humans are at least partially contributing to it, you could say we are helping to create a new climate.
I don't think mother earth is doing anything intelligently or as a reflex to lower our population; we're just dumb fucks who forgot how to live w/ nature and are destroying eden.

well im not saying that mother earth has a concious or has intelligence or whatever. im just say we have may have reached the maximum sustainable human population within an environment. I mean at some point a given ecosystem can no longer sustain its inhabitants if they keep growing in number. that especially considering our using of natural resources. also in a way we have somewhat increased our consumption efficiency in certain areas of the world, however overall prob increased total consumption. i wonder what is the most sustainable population and what is their consuming/depleting efficiency such that it is maintainable over a extended amount of time?

Well, the most sustainable populations are native groups scattered across the globe which are constantly having their land stolen from them by westerners so they can drill for oil or build a sweatshop.
Yeah, the first thing we would notice as we approached the earth's population capacity would be a scarcity of basic goods. Staple foods would be in short supply, clean water, medical care, etc. Although currently we in the west are feeling the effects of less oil production...

From the abovementioned wiki:
Optimists believe that the 2006 population level of over six billion may be supported by current resources, or that the global population may grow to ten billion and still be within the Earth's carrying capacity. In The Skeptical Environmentalist, Bjørn Lomborg argued that because of the falling rate of population growth in some regions, and because of new technologies, there is little problem with overpopulation. The assumptions that underlie these claims, however, have been strongly criticised[12]. One criticism is that poor people can't afford such technologies. One counterargument is that meat production is very energy inefficient, so that food availability would increase if protein sources like soybeans were used in lieu of meat, since humans would then be eating lower on the food chain. However, given that this would require enough people giving up meat for soy and other plant based protein to make an agricultural shift in production meaningful, this argument may be unrealistic. It also assumes that the grain fed to livestock is fit for human consumption. [10]
Optimists claim that there will be no mass starvation due to a shortage of arable land. About 21% of the earth's land is arable. In the past, 160 acres (650,000 m²) of farm land crops fed one person. Hydroponics in autonomous building gardens and greenhouses grow more food in less space, although the requirement for fresh water may limit this technology. Most food production experiments have used vegetable farming because it can support an adult from as little as 15 m² of land. High crop yield vegetables like potatoes and lettuce do not waste space with inedible plant parts, like stalks, husks, vines, and inedible leaves. New varieties of selectively bred and hybrid plants have larger edible parts (fruit, vegetable, grain) and smaller inedible parts. With new technologies, it is now possible to grow crops on some unarable land under certain conditions. Aquaculture could theoretically dramatically increase available area. Hydroponics and food from bacteria and fungi, like Quorn, may allow the growing of food without having to consider land quality, climate, or even available sunlight, although such a process may be very energy-intensive.
In defending these new technologies, optimists, also called cornucopians, can overlook the fact that not all arable land will remain so if it is used for agriculture, as some marginal land can only be made to produce food by unsustainable practices like slash-and-burn agriculture. They have also been criticized for failing to account for future shortages in fossil fuels, required for modern agriculture. (See Hubbert peak) They often counter that there will be ample fossil fuel supplies until after fossil fuel-reliant technologies have been phased out, [11] or even that Hubbert's "peak oil" theory is wrong and that we will never run out of oil in the foreseeable future [12].

i really hate to think about this stuff...major buzzkill
the global warming phenomina has actually been studied and the earth actually goes through an exponential gain in temperature over the course of many millenia(independant of human pollution) untill it just drops off. theoretically this dropoff(rapid cooling) is caused by the melting of the ice caps which messes with water currents and causes massive weather pattern changes...ice age anyone. and gradually it returns to normal and the entire process starts over.
this entire study was based on core samples which may be bullshit any ways...just my 2 cents

Here, anyway the the heat, tends to come in cycles. I remember the summer of 1980, that was one of the hottest, and one of the most fun for me. Hell, its summer in Texas, I do have pity for the older folks, and others without the means for AC.

You're right habitat,
The earth does cycle through climate change over time, ice core sample prove this.
But, we are also contributing to the current state of affairs; we may not be the "cause" of global warming, but all of our hydrocarbon burning sure is a great catalyst!

Interesting articles, however after a certain point these technologies have no gain towards extra life sustaining on earth. there must be a limit, what is it? there is all this global warming talk going around now, is it mularkey or is it viable? if the latter than i would think we would have to be in the leveling off regime of human population.

Well, yeah dude.
Unless we invent (and the black had which secretly controls everything allows the masses to have) some super technologies or we begin colonizing other worlds, we'll just keep fucking till we can't support our own children.
And yes, millions will die, but such is the way of natural balance.

I don't know but I'm too hot to be able to even think right now. My air conditioner causes a short circuit every time I turn it on so I have to rely on a stupid box fan. It's been hot as hell for several days now. Sleeping at night is no easy endeavor. It's really starting to mess with my mind. I almost put in some over time at work today just to stay in the air conditioned environment a little longer. Now that's just plain crazy.

Yeah and it's not like we have another planet in our solar system that would be more inhabitable than a cataclysmic earth.
I don't think the human race will ever make it outside of the solar system. Mars maybe but outside of the solar system is pretty fucking far. And I wonder how far the nearest planet is that could naturally sustain human beings. Makes you think.

Blurb from this article http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:_OS...lient=firefox-a
DISCOVERY OF EARTH-LIKE PLANET ADVANCES SEARCH FOR LIFE IN SPACE
Two scientists at the School of Physics and Astronomy of the University of St Andrews, Scotland have played a crucial role in the discovery of a new planet which astronomers believe is the most Earth-like found to date.
The new planet, designated by the unglamorous identifier OGLE-2005- BLG-390Lb, has a mass five times that of Earth and is approximately 20,000 light years from us near the centre of the Milky Way where it orbits its parent star, a red dwarf some five times less massive than the Sun.
This is the closest earth-like planet. Only take 20,000 years traveling at light speed! Meet ya there. Yeah, we're stuck on earth...

Ah, but what if the very manufacture, transport, or sale of the goods harms others/the environment?
Once the damage is done, why would it matter what the person who actually buys the stereo (for example) thinks?

Then in an absolutist sense, the one that made the actual harm made the harm. Sometimes we have no way of knowing what harm was caused in order to bring us even the most basic and essential of products. That is a symptom of being a part of "modern society".

there def is nothing wrong with having goods, its the staple of our society right now. im just saying you are a consumer.
con·sum·er ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kn-smr) n. One that consumes, especially one that acquires goods or services for direct use or ownership rather than for resale or use in production and manufacturing. A heterotrophic organism that ingests other organisms or organic matter in a food chain.
there is no ethics or morals in the definition of a consumer as some may try and associate with.

I totally agree. And this means that the very mode in which we are living (in the numbers that we are) on this earth cannot help but be terribly impersonal and destructive. At least, the way we're doing things right now.

Exactly dude.
We're like gears in a machine, except that the machine can easily replace our function, but we NEED the machine.
But yeah, the problem is clearly the METHOD in which we are living, so...the cure may rest in finding a new METHOD of living on the earth.

We could just get rid of the industrial society shit and go back to nature.
It would be cool if we just ended up back in nature in 2012.

Right. Well, maybe people can focus on doing things for themselves or on a community level, like a community garden, and we can attempt to minimize "special manufacured" items and how much we use them.
Think Globally, act locally.

It's because mankind has imagination to build all of this shit. Ants just pile up dirt, they don't "envision" what it's gonna look like when it's done.

Yeah,
humans are the only animals* that can construct things based on intelligence rather than instinct. Like, when a bee builds a honeycomb, it has no idea what it's doing. It just reacts instinctively, like when you are pulling your hand off a stove.
But, MATRIX, are you saying that what we do isn't natural because we can "think" about it? I've never thought about it like that. But that would seem to imply that we and our thoughts are alien or separate from nature. Are they?
*Many of the greater apes and a few clever birds are able to construct tools on the fly. This implies a clear presence of mind. However, these are the exceptions in the animal kingdom. While birds, apes, and birds INVENT TOOLS, most other animals simply react instinctively and partake in repetitive, unconscious movements that result in a structure or hill. Also, since man is the only animal to split atoms and fly to the moon, we will say that his tool making ability is in a class all its own. I was very high when I wrote this.

We're set apart from nature and the rest of the animal kingdom due to our god-like abilities to create, yes.
And now can we keep a planet alive with all of this creativity?

I agree. So, you think that we are such a threat to the natural order because we have such freedom of thought? I mean, because we can conceive of so many possibilities/configurations, aren't we bound as animals to invent some of the most terrible things along with some of the most beautiful? But, perhaps some of those terrible things are bad enough to threaten the health of the planet as a whole? Is our only hope that we can conceive of some equally powerful curative technologies that will restore the balance? Are we capable of this? Or will we all be sitting on our ass watching American Idol when it all falls down or simply becomes too unbearable.
Wow, I hadn't read your post when i wrote this, but we basically said the same thing.

how do you know they cant envision it? thats impossible to tell at least by our standards today. so you are implying that there is genetic knowledge then, since ant instinctively know to construct their structures. even so if they know how to construct and whatnot they still have to communicate when they are formed to assimilate into the already preexisting system. they cant simply be formed with pre-cognizance of the structure of the said hive whatever, or i guess you could say they could if knowledge can be genetically transferred. thats kindof weird im still going with communication and intelligence.

Dude, it's genetic memory! Insects have it BIG TIME!
Think about it! Think about all of the amazing things an ant can do, but it has hardly any thinking capacity man (very few neurons). They are basically clockwork. Seriously.
Lower animals make much more use of genetic memory than us. An example: In bio class, if you put a fluke worm through a maze a few times, it will eventually find the path pretty quickly. But, if you then remove the worm from the maze and let it create offspring, all offspring "remember" going through the maze and are able to get through much quicker than a newly introduce worm.

My feeling is that mankind as a whole will not regret it's actions in time to make a difference. Historically, mankind only fixes problems after they are looming large in the viewfinders. Unfortunately, that approach will never work in regards to the health of a planet's ecosystem.
The planet will probably just sneeze us off one day.

Amen brother. You and I are 100% in agreement on this. I mean, if you just have a basic understanding of human history and also the true condition of the planet, it's easy to figure out that we're not on the right track and don't seem too concerned about it.
Too bad, we have such potential.

Well, no on can doubt that the universe favors/preserves/creates complex forms, and we're the most complex forms around!
I too find it hard to believe that novelty and creativity will be crushed by ignorance and selfishness. But then again, that's what's got us all sitting on the edge of our seats, eh?

well here's the biggest problem i see, if you cann't grow enough food in your backyard to substane you for the year...then you will be fucked...and very soon indeed. but i mean think about it ...so many people on so many streets and nobody has any yard to grow anything...thats a huge problem.
althow this won't really matter when the sun is blocked by black chemical clouds they just sit there because we have no ozone layer left.
and now were trying to get flying cars and jet packs because our streets are too polluted with cars to drive on them anymore....real reason there pushing them flyin cars is because its costing so much money to repair the roads...there breaking down to fast now....but they forgot about the sky....that they cann't repair when we burn holes in it.
overall the wheels are turning towards the future...and nothing can stop a ball that big. we cann't prevent earth from turning into a huge toylet.....but it will happen....we have been brainwashed to have so many different beliefs so we cann't unite on anything to trick us into following a gov. and that is what will be the end of us....we will never agree together as a whole to take our dicks out of mother nature for one minute....how could we do it for an entire future???
and now we have another pollution that nobody even talks about and thats radio waves from cell phones...every inch of our world is covered with them now....add it all up and that is causeing the earth to heat up as well....one big fucking microwave....yet all the "scientists" say there completely harmless....how is it that its people without degree's in science are the ones that can figuer out how stupid weve treated the world...and all the stupid gagets we create on a daily basis to fuck it up even more.
p.s. on the topic of food....my local market has been having a shortage on lots of items....aparently its allready happening.
