Oddly enough, the old man I found today bruised a reddish brown on the pores when pressed.

Meanwhile, I have seen them bruise black, and I even have one rather ripe specimen whose pores are black (instead of pale gray) and actually have a metallic tinge of deep reds and greens in the pores.

Strange indeed, but probably one of my favorite mushrooms being it was the first positive ID I ever made shrooming.

As for bluefoots...I do check for blue "feet", and enjoy knowing if a mushroom is active or not, but I don't consume actives Silverfox.

Here are some examples of old man bruising:

There is a lack of literature on confusus for the most part, as far as my resources go anyway. One book of mine describes it in full detail, but it's put away and buried under all kind of junk.. to lazy to go get it out.

An online source talks about the difference a little bit.

Quote:

Strobilomyces confusus is smaller, and has small, hard projections rather than loose, wooly scales. Additionally, it has spores that are ornamented, but less clearly reticulate.
