To purchase old versions of windows anymore?
I'd like to install windows 98 or 95 on my computer and set up my system to let me select which one to boot up to, but I've heard from some people that Microsoft tried to make it very difficult to buy old versions of windows so that people would be forced to use newer iterations of the OD.

Windows 98 is discontinued and contains a serious security flaw which Microsoft isn't planning to patch. I'd go with Win2K or if your hardware isn't up to it, Linux.

Windows 9x is a necessity for this specific purpose, I won't be using it often, only to play old games built for windows 9x that won't function on XP even with compatibility mode.
If I get a 9x OS up and running, Lucasarts tech support can't brush me off with "we don't support that game for the XP OS".
2000 is unsupported for this game and others as well. I'm talking mid/late 90's games here.

I still use Win98 at work. Not for an online computer, but for one that interfaces with our CNC. The program will ONLY work with win98 for whatever reason and a suitable replacement has yet to be discovered.
I suppose a copy of win98 would be pretty easy to get if you wanted it.

> The program will ONLY work with win98 for whatever reason
I have gotten many programs that will only work with win98 to work with XP. In every case, the programs required a FAT32 file system in addition to setting the runtime emulation to win98.
However, the flaw Ythan was speaking of in win9x is network related. If the box is standalone, then you have few worries.

I can leave the computer unplugged from the network when I'm on 98, I won't be needing internet access.
Now there's the problem of figuring out how to set up selective boot with 98 and XP on the same hard drive, that might be a pain in the ass, I never did learn how to set that up.
Someone has kindly offered to send me a 98 SE cd, so thankfully I'm set with '98, and for free too.

You make a primary partition, and an extended partition with 1 or 2 logical drives in it. First you install win98 in the first partition. Then you install xp in the first logical drive, and it will create the boot menu for you.

well that doesn't seem too difficult. As soon as I can buy another hard-drive to back my files up to, I can just reformat my main drive and set it up with partitions for 98 and XP.
Thanks

God this is a real graverobbing bump... but I'm just now preparing to do this and realized that I don't understand the "logical drives" part of the instructions.
Would this be an option that comes up during the formatting part of a windows XP installation, or would it need a bit effort than that?

I dunno about for purchase but here's a torrent of some retro-badboys you may wanna try out
-Microsoft DOS 1.1 -Microsoft DOS 2.2 -Microsoft DOS 3.2 -Microsoft DOS 3.3 -Microsoft DOS 4.0 -Microsoft DOS 4.01 -Microsoft DOS 5.00 -Microsoft DOS 6.20 -Microsoft Windows 1.01 -Microsoft Windows 1.02 -Microsoft Windows 1.03 -Microsoft Windows 1.04 -Microsoft Windows 2.10 -Microsoft Windows 3.11 PL -MS-DOS_7.10.Full.Version -WinDos 265 Disktop main -WinDos 265 Disktop program
Go into Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>DiskManagement then just make a new partition. Or there's other programs you can download to more easily manage partitions. I have the Windows Vista Beta on one partition of mine so when I start my computer it asks either Vista or XP

If I make a partition from within XP, can I then proceed to format the XP-containing partition from a boot disk and then reinstall windows on it?
I sometimes forget which is supposed to occur first... formatting, or creating partitions.
If I'm going to back shit up and make partitions, I'm going to reformat as well... my HD needs it.

Yes definitely reformat first, then make partitions. I think it even prompts you to create partitions during the first installation of windows.
