Primary and Secondary Sources
    #5922678 - 08/01/06 06:19 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Having a problem with something. I've tried googling and looking in my MLA Handbook, but I can't find a list defining what are primary sources and what are secondary sources. Frankly, I don't remember from high school. so if anyone could help out, it'd be awesome.

From what I remember, a secondary source is anything that is restating information that it gained from a different source. Generally this means that if your source is quoting or paraphrasing something else, then it is a secondary source.

A primary source is the original publication of the information given.

see, I have that part of it down, but a lot of journals and books restate other ideas and give them credit. And I've seen contrary lists for each.

Look at the thesis, if it's unique it's still a primary source, even if it references background information. If the article is just explaining others' conclusions without bringing anything new to the table, it's a secondary source.
