help with rooting cacti.
    #5922116 - 08/01/06 02:56 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

been trying to root pachanoi, peruvian, and bridgesii cuttings for over a month and not a sprout, ive tried dry soil, sand, dry cactus bedding, and even a little moisture, NADA.
the soil is warm and they receive scattered sunlight.
I figured by now they would at least be budding some roots, ive been checking weekly, but nothing. so whats the trick?

what is sucessful for those with experience that i missed in all the procedures ive read?

i water after a little bit. i believe the moisture will coax it to root. after water let it dry out again completely so it doesnt rot. when im rooting mine the rain tends to saturate the soil more then i would like but no problems with rot.

I've had good luck rooting my pachanoi's and bridgesii, but peruvianus (I think mine is a cuzcoensis anyway) doesn't root as easily IME.

I just put them in my soil mix and let it sit inside for a few weeks, in rather dry soil. And then I give them a little water if they look thirsty.

Maybe you're hindering progress by checking every week? I learned that if something is just putting out root nodes, if you lift it and then put it back, they could shrivel and die. (the budding roots, that is)

yeah, i make sure my cactus heal up good before i try to root them also. i made sure i can press on the callous hard and it wont crack.

i usualy use a 1 gallon pot or bigger filled with sand and little hard chunks of red clay from our area in a 6:1 sand:clay mixture.
I fill the container full, then pour 1/4 off into a sepperate container, place the cactus in the middle, and hold in place while i sprinkle sand in around all sides. all in all about 2 inches into the sand, or enough to keep the cactus upright on its own without worry of wind knocking it over. the sand/clay mixture will actualy harden together once all gets going, but it can easily be broken up by hand when u want to plant. water the first time you plant, and leave it till its been dry for 3 or 4 days, then water again. repeat this process for 2 weeks, and then hold your cactus firmly and start pulling up, if it gives the slightest, give it another week before you check it again. dont pull your cactus fully out, just tug it enough to see if its got a hold on its substrate.

this method works everytime for me, ive rooted pedros, cleistocactus, prickly pear, some weird little guys that look like lophs, and a ton more i cant begin to describe. drjellineck is very right in stating that the young roots are very delicate and cactus like to be left alone mostly when trying to root. as durban correctly states, they dont like much water when trying to root, the root growth in triggered by the cactus when its in search of water. so after the first watering, let it sit for a while like mentioned and make sure that the substrate dries really well and stays dry for a few days on end before watering it again. you should do at least 3 or 4 waterings before checking the cactus for roots. it takes patience but if u got a big enough garden, im sure u will be kept busy.

after well over a month withought a single root sprout in hot dry soil i said screw it,

SOAKED the buggers.

next day, THE VERY NEXT DAY. that ALL had roots. SUBSTANTIAL roots.

so from now on im just gonna go ahead and water cuttings. :P

heck, my peruvian even pupped from the mousture. OVERNIGHT!

all it took was water, which every guide ive read said is BAD for rootless cacti.

it worked on my peruvians, bridgesii, AND pachanoi. Badda boom, all done, planted, and ready to grow.

I was worried i wouldn't get any solid growth this season.

so i guess when all else fails, use water

Not to derail this thread or anything, but I think these are somewhat relevant. Just took these pics this evening of this 6" bridgesii cutting that was just sitting in a pantry, all wrapped up in newspaper for a few months. When I went to check it out, I noticed that it had started pupping and rooting. This guy is demanding water and light, and is very oriented towards finding some.

The root bud coming out the bottom:

A colorless pup that needs some sunlight ASAP:

I'm mailing this thing out to my friend tomorrow, and he can give it what it needs.

I just let mine sit in a basket hanging from a rafter for a few months. Normaly when i take them down they have several pups forming along with plenty of root buds. They have there seasons to. I always like to take the cuttings in the fall. Then i let them sit all winter. Then they are really wanting to root as soon as it gets warm. My cuttings from last fall, all rooted this spring. They each produced two pups each and they are each about 5 inches now. So almost a total of ten inches per cutting of new growth. I think when you root them is whats important.

lovely fotos Mitch.

Most of all it just takes time. Judgeing by the pix next year they will take off.
after all they are cacti. Not the fastest plants out there fo sho.

Exciting stuff!

Congrats!

I recommend rooting hormone... I've used it on several cacti, seems to work fine, never had any problems or anything

diddnt work for me, I applied it to areoles and trunk, and they all ended up rooting out the bottom several weeks later anyway (immediately after watering) really dolloped it on too.
