What's your take on the final scene?

Yeah the feel of it is really bizarre. Very spacey. Pink Floyd would probably have made an excellent soundtrack.
Though half the time all you can hear is breathing. I guess that gives you a better feel for the vastness and silence of space.

Try sync-ing it up with echoes, off meddle that is, not the echoes collection disc. theres a copy of it floating around the internet, i think its mostly just the last scene and the song i cant remember though.

I had a really amazing time seeing this movie for the first time. It was fucking great. OMR and I ate some paper and saw it at the Ziggfield in the city. such a moving movie.
All i could do was listen to Echoes for like DAYS after.

Yeah, Echoes is synched up with the last chapter of 2001. Ironically, the last chapter of the movie and the song Echoes are the exact same length. There are videos of it floating around the internet and it's pretty freaking trippy.

Yeah, those vids are awesome. It sucks that the Echoes bit is chopped up into 3 parts. I had seen the one with One Of These Days before as well.
I also have a video of that entire movie synched with Floyd music. The first part of it is the studio album of Ummagumma and then Atom Heart Mother and then Echoes concluding it.

A Space Odyssey was visually amazing, but a complete butchering of the actual story.
For more science fiction madness, you may want to see The Andromeda Strain and Altered States.

"My god!...It's full of stars..." <-----Best moment in movie. Also, kubrick2001.com is awesome.
People today don't have enough of an attention-span for this film, although Stanley does push it a little at some points...

Altered States is a really good movie. Kubrick didn't do that too, did he?

But I mean, do you know what I'm talking about? I personally love this film and have a hard time understanding people who think it's a bore (not enough explosions and five second sound bites, I guess).
But at some points, like when stan just flashes the screen with various colored landscapes for like 15 min, that's a bit much...unless you're tripping of course.
But the film and the themes it covers are still ahead of it's time today.

yes i enjoy films that have a theme or meanings that take time to develop.

lol def, but when you are tripping its fucking crazy you are contemplating so many things and you have this insane visual stimulation. its classic and awsome.

certainly.
personally i love the monkey first using the tool scene. banging the fucking bones and whatnot. the music is great the scene is great, given not the best costumes but you can forget that for its time. this is an original movie with original themes. the obelisk-like structure and the apes basically evolving is a classic scene in cinema.
