Mushroom ID with Photos, Ontario
    #5919943 - 07/31/06 09:00 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Not sure what these are, i found them growing in pine needles close to a farm that i was checking out. I did find some small mushrooms in the hay bales, but they were too small to bother taking, although they were slimy and looked like they had black spores. I'll haveto go back.

anyways, if you could ID this one, i would appreciate it. I thought it might be an amanita at first, i know i've seen them before.

It looks like an Agaricus. Amanitas have light colored gills usually.

As for the ones in the hay bails with black gills - some possibilities would include Coprinus or Panaeolus. The Coprinus mushrooms that grow in hay are far more common, so I'd have to bet on it being that. Especially since you mentioned slimy - they turn to ink/slime with age.

Yup yup, beat me to it
However, this specimen could belong to any of four species which are debated among mycologists whether their differences warrant a seperate species, or if rather, the 4 constitute a "species cluster", essentialy comprised of one species, and four sub-species.

One of the four dubious species in the supposed "cluster" is Agaricus praeclaresquamosus, the other three are A. placomyces, A. meleagris, and A. pocillator, which are characterized by a longer and thinner stipe discernible from many other Agaricus, as well as a "scaled" cap.
