Types of WBS
    #5919642 - 07/31/06 07:31 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Just wondering if it matters of what type of WBS you can grow with. At wal-mart there are at least 20 different kinds i find.

Wal-Mart has Bird Ration, my personal favorite, and Pennington brand that is proven here on the Shroomery. Beyond that I can't be much help.

Thanx for the tips. I grew with verm and BRF already and it turned out fine. But I want to step it up a little and use WBS in 8 jars and hopefully the results will be excellent.

PetCo, or PetsMart (I forget which) has a brand called bird basics.
It's 40 lbs for around $8. It works well.

But, any brand, even bulk food barrel type works.
You want the type with a primary content of millet, and Milo (sorghum).
You do not want a high sunflower seed content, peanuts, food coloring or oil additives.

I've used Wild Finch Seed from Walmart, and it was good. The Wild Finch Seed contained a lot of millet and no sunflower seeds, but it was pricey per volume compared to other brands.

I recently bought a 25lbs bag of Penningtons from Walmart, it's decent. With the Penningtons you have to make sure you skim off all the sunflower seeds, which just so conviently float to the top. Stir the pot after you skim the top layer off and it will aggitate the mass so more rises up. I learned that while soaking them yesterday.

Not meaning to hijack, but what is it about sunflower seeds that are detrimental to myc growth, exactly? I bought a 20lb bag of, well, I don't recall the brand. I think it was Bird's Song, or Song Bird, or some shit that had to do with birds singing, possibly in the morning. It was mostly white millet, with some sunflower and safflower seeds. I picked all the floaters off, stirred, picked more floaters off, lather, rinse, repeat. Then, this morning as I was draining and loading up a case of jars (PCing as I type) I noticed some hulled sunflower seeds in the mix. Is there something in them the myc just won't feed on, will they just be rejected, or will they actually stop the rest of the millet from colonising? I'm just curious as to why everyone says "get ALL the sunflower seeds out of your WBS" because I have yet to read a legitamate reason as to why they have to be removed.

Peace.

The myc won't grow on them. It's no big deal if there are some still in there. But if you have a lot it will invite contams. Having them in there means ending up with uncolonized substrate (just on the sunflower seed shells). That provides a place for contams to grow.

For some reason myc won't grow on them. It's not like verm or perlite where the myc will just surround it, it somehow seems to prevent the myc from wanting to come into contact with it.

Not sure how correct this information is, but I remember reading somewhere on the site that Sunflower seed's contain oils that do not foster myc growth at all.

green mold doesn't seem to mind them.  had a wbs jar a while back that got green.  it was kind of funny actually, because everything was colonized nicely with healthy white mycelium, aside from a bunch of moldy green sunflower seeds

they usually dont cause a problem for me though, not enough to bother picking them out or anything... just try to avoid mixes with lots of 'em

penningtons for me. Sunflower seeds actually contain some lignins (sp, always fuck it up), so having a few in there wont hurt.

There is about 3 or 4% sunflower seeds in these jars.

If the percent of sunflower seeds is very low, they do no harm.
As a matter of fact, they provide oils, a good thing.

The difficulty is, to many provide TO MUCH OIL, a BAD THING.

werd, I take a 5 gal bucket and fill it half way with penningtons then filler up with water and then i take a fish tank net and skim out most of the sunflower seeds. Some end up evading me but like tippin said a few wont hurt..

i pull off the easy bulk of them while hydrating, but i dont sweat removing all the seeds. no problems here. i watch the myc colonize them like everything else...
