I'm a biology major and I really enjoy using microscopes. Using them was the best part about lab. Does anyone know anything about microscopes in terms of prices, brands, availability, etc? I wouldn't mind having a cool microscope. Preferably one with a camera or a really easy to use eye-piece. But I don't want to buy like..a toy. I can find shitty microscopes anywhere. I'm hoping one of you guys knows something about them.
Thanks!

Hmm... What exactly do you want to know?
I'll assume that your probably looking for a cheap but decent scope.
You'll want... All metal construction. Don't get anything that's plastic A mechanical stage. Coarse and fine focus. A 1000X oil immersion objective. Some sort of light source, hopefully with a condenser.
Anything that meets those criteria should be decent. Don't get anything that claims a power higher than 1000X, they're shit. Make sure the 1000X is an oil immersion objective. Non-oil objectives can't resolve properly at 1000X.
If you've got a little more money look for... Infinity corrected optics. Achromat or plan-achromat objectives. Abbe condenser. A good configuration is 10X eyepieces and 100X largest objective.
Try looking at auctions and surplus sales where people might not know the value of a scope. Ebay's not too bad.
PM me with any questions. I don't check this forum too often.

For what it's worth I have a BS in Biology and I use scopes daily at work. In my lab I'm looking at tissue cultures that are suspected to contain pathogenic microorganisms, and by adding a direct flourescing antibody I can visually see the bacteria as a preliminary test result. We exclusively use Zeiss microscopes. Zeiss has been making scopes for a LONG time, I believe over 100 years, and offer the best image money can buy. The scope I have in my lab (10 feet from me now...) is probably over $50K with all the objectives, the digital camera and PC with it. However, older models are still very well made and might be able to be bought cheap at government auctions and the like. For personal use I can't imagine ever getting a Zeiss, but if you happen to see one in your searching know that you are getting the best machined objectives ever made.
