I'm just getting a smiley face on my middle finger (I don't dare trust the shop I'm going to with anything more lucrative) and just wondering, if I want to exercise, say run, what's a good way to care for the tattoo (I've heard of wrapping it)

Unless the back of your fingers sweat profusely, I think it will be ok.

Love/Hate across the knuckles, or maybe some barbed wire, or perhaps a chinese symbol?

Actually it's not on the knuckle, but that other...space
And Chinese symbols are so mainstream, if I were to do that, something in sanskrit

Any tattie you get will be so completely geh if it's not something you've thought up yourself, that has to do with yourself, your lifestyle etc. What's cool to one, may not be to another.... so get a tattie of whatever rocks your boat!
Forget other peoples influences or you'll end up with a cheezy old heard tattie with some exes name in it.... hear what i'm sayin'???

Don't get a tat just for the sake of getting one. Think hard about something that will mean something to you. Remember, it's permanent. And if what you have in mind is more complex than what you think the tattoo shop can do, then go to a different shop.

While it's true this tattoo is a bit out of my ass, it does reflect a certain flippancy I display to most people

A tattoo isnt something that should be taken lightly. As others have said, it is permanent. Something that is permanently on your body, especially in view of others should have some sort of personal meaning or significance, otherwise its pointless.
This is my view anyway.
