What a nice fluffy top!
They were slower to colonize than I'm used to, but they turned out nice. I used Brown's Traditional Parakeet Food. In the future I'll prepare the mix for each jar separately because too much water pooled at the bottom of the mixing bowl.
Three of these were cased in coco-coir ordered from Future Garden. 6 pack is $10 and will last you forever, but they're a legitimate garden company and ship their orders as Future Garden. It's worth getting.

i had a question about water content also. if i steep my birdseed (which i have not done in the past) does that let the birdseed absorb all the water it needs? or how do i know after steeping how much water to add into my quarts?

Trial and error. Its best to 'wash' birdseed, so if its going into a jar wet, then u need less water added.
Try a few different combination, and keep track of your results. You will soon find the right ratio. So if you try 4 different water combinations in 4 different jars, in a pc, u should get a pretty good idea from that.
Waterlogged birdseed leads to contamination problems 90% of the time

Ecuador, originally obtained from Sporechicks and grown out once before on a different substrate mixture.
It took aprroximately three weeks to get to the point where it was before being cased. It may have been a little early, but this is a first experience with millet.

well, i tried using a ..... sort of scientific method, i put the water in the quart along with the birdseed and shook it for a while, then drained out all the water i could back into my measuring cup.... then added that much fresh distilled water back in. the jars seem to be pretty shakeable and not too wet.
