mycobag recommendation
    #5918784 - 07/31/06 02:56 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

This isn't a question really, but I thought I'd share my experience thus far with a mycobag attempt:

Before finding these forums, I bought a mycobag and a syringe, followed proper sterilization, and inoculated it. I put it into a dark warm-ish (upper 70's) place for several days, checking it everyday (someone said something about newbies "loving their mycobags to death"), and it showed no signs of growth.

I wandered here and searched for information on mycobags and found a lot of helpful stuff -- such as that the substrate should be mashed loose before inoculation, and that you should inoculate in between the plastic and injection site. Well, not knowing this, I inoculated into the center of the brick-like substrate and after a week I had no growth. So I reinoculated.

After doing so I waited about another week and still had no growth. I decided to build an incubation chamber like the one here. I did so last Wednesday, but discovered Thursday that my heater wasn't working due to a switch being turned off. I turned it on, went out of town, and came back. Today I checked it, about four days since putting it into the incubator which is holding at about 85 degrees (F), and there is just a growth explosion in multiple places throughout the bag. I inoculated with quite a bit of spore solution both times, and the stuff that I originally inoculated with in the center was spread throughout when I mashed it.

So, in short, I highly recommend an incubator for mycobags! I thought I had a dud of a syringe or something, but wow. Room temperature really isn't enough, I guess.
