Canning jars when used for there true purpose (Preserving food) get PCed with the lid on not completely sealed then on cooling they become vaccumed shut if you put a Canning jar with food in it sealed very tight it would explode
It sounds like the Vendor PCed your rye as if it was some Beans from the garden

It shouldn't explode if you do it right. Jars will sometimes crack, but exploding jars is a myth IMO/IME.

MediumMania has apologized and has promised to compensate me. I will let you know if they do. If so compensated, then they are alright in my book.

I also just recieved jars with no holes from medium mania. I'm not really sure what to do with them. I got the "tyvek filter patches" (from usps priority mail envelopes......" and the micropore tape and coffee filters. I have inocculated 2 of the 6 jars that I recieved in a laminar flow hood under very sterile conditions. I am keeping the others, untouched, but incubated as controls. I am lucky to have access to such equipment. Many other people are not as lucky. The 'vaccum' effect is indeed a very strong source of potential contaminants, even in sterile conditions.

The people at Medium Mania offered to send me more bags of compost to compensate me, yet I have not received them.
I am certain I am being gaffed off now.

Before I started making my own jars, I ordered 6 from Medium Mania and they also came with no holes poked in the lids. I sterilized an area, sterlilized a nail and punched 4 holes in each jar. Inoculated, and sterilized a piece of foil and covered it. That was a week or so ago, and every jar's over 40% colonized already. No contams whatsoever. Didn't take any super precautions, just made sure my area and utensils were clean. The only sterilization the foil got was lysol/alcohol wiped.

warn the people! they have a right to know!
but seriously, the shroomerys reputation could be severely damaged if these rogue sponsors keep ripping off decent people.
the shroomery doesn't seem to see the big picture.

The FAQ section of the vendors site clearly states
"We ship our jars completely sealed, to guarantee that they will reach you in a fresh, sterile, and usuable condition. If you would like us to punch holes for you, simply let let us know. "
This should be stated CLEARLY on the jar ordering page.
I would guess they sterilize jars sealed for STORAGE purposes. Since, a sealed jar would keep for a very long period. In effect the content is "canned", and preserved by vacuum.
If the lid had an injection port, and filter patch. it would not store for long periods, because of gas exchange through the filter patch. In other words, the content would begin to dry out.
A jar containing a vacuum is problematical.
Because, when you pierce the lid, the vacuum will suck in air. Unless the lid is pierced in front of a flow-hood. Or, in a sanitized glove box.
Odds are very high, the jar will suck in airborne contaminates, when the lid is pierced.
There is a simple way around the problem. But, it would add a little labor, and a few cents in costs.
