Is the lid required?
    #591086 - 03/27/02 02:44 PM (22 years, 6 days ago)

Last night I sterilized my first substrate jars (I hope). I placed eight jars with aluminum foil over the tops in boiling water and left them there for an hour, without a lid. I haven't innoculated them yet. Do I have to sterilize those damn things again because I forgot to put the lid on? Can I let it slide? Please advise...

I've gotten by with just plain foil on my jars , but I had a PC to do the work. You may well run into problems.

My advice is definitely to resterilize and do it with the lids on. Or preferably to redo the substrate preparation, because there's a good chance you could have boiled the moisture out of your jars as well.

Do you mean that you didn't have a lid on your pot of water? If that's the case, then resterilize the jars with the lid on until cooled.

If he did it with the lid off the pot, he needs to redo the substrate preparation.  There's always the hard way of learning this... three weeks after inoculation, still no germination.  I wonder what I did wrong??

>If he did it with the lid off the pot, he needs to redo the substrate preparation.

Why?

It's sufficient if he resterilizes the jars with the pot lid on.

I've boiled the moisture out of my substrate before, just didn't want the same thing to happen to him.
