first grow in long time, quick question

Hi guys, this is my first grow in over a year. Just boiled some WBS and put it in microwave safe half pint jars, burned holes in the lid with a heated screw driver, and put two coffee filters over the lid before closing. Microwaved for 3 minutes.. currently waiting for jars to cool down. Was woundering, dose it matter how many coffee filters I use? and even thou i am using a coffee filter, is their still a worry of contamination if i dont cover the lid with foil?? any advise would be apperciated, I usually use the old PF pressure cooker method.

Sadly, I would say those will come to a foul end.
Microwave sterilization is hit & miss, at best.
Also, a microwave creates so much heat, moisture will steam off/out.
So, the odds are the content is not sterile, and will end up far to dry to colonize, anyway.
EDIT: to add,
A PC also creates steam heat, but it is under pressure. Which you allow to subside, so content doesn't boil. So, PC'ed jars don't lose as much moisture content.

and to add some salt to that wound...
coffee filters are not suitable filter material. they make a fine dust cover, but are too porous to protect the holes, they need to be covered with polyfill/tyvek/micropore etc.
your only chance at hell at microwave sterilizing would involve nuking it, waiting, doing so again, etc. so that the heat gets up high, and remains high for a while. 3 minutes isn't going to come close. even if you do the microwave sterilization 'correctly' its still hit and miss, and almost a garunteed failure with wbs.

yeah joke aside that'd probably do it
and as soon as he shakes the jar to break up the grain and makes a wet spot that soaks thru 'em all, its done for.

i bet 3 coffee filters with a foil cover while pcing/cooling would be enough. ya'll are all gloom and doom, but microwaves are wack.

heh don't mean to be so doom and gloom but this early in a project when you have the choice to do things the right way, or the wrong way, its so much wiser to choose the right way

Lets not forget, he is using a microwave.
Aluminum foil in a microwave tends to spark/ignite things. Not to mention, burn out the tube.

but a CD in the microwave is fun for the whole family! try it with the lights off. WAIT! BETTER YET. i love this trick.
take short glass and put a lightbulb in it, screwside down. then fill with water until it barely covers the metal on the bulb. then turn off the lights and gather round as you start up the microwave. the light bulb will turn on because microwaves are poison energy machines from the devil. neat trick though, make the bitches go crazy.

getting back on topic, If boiling WBS for a good 20-30 minutes and then, directly after straining, put it in a platic jar and microwave for 3 minutes.. that dosn't sterilize anything??? I dont really think it means it can't be done. plus, i spooned in some water before microwaving and there is much much moisture still left inside the jar. Not to mention the wbs was so plump with water after such a long boil. I waited at least 5 hours before everything was cooled down enough to inject spores. I injected the spores carfully and sterilly trying to slide the need thru the side of the holes i burned in the lid as to try not to tear the filters where they might be prone to contamintaion. Then i wrapped the jars in paper towles and put them in a sterile bag. Im pretty sure everything is quiet sterile currently, just need to figure out how i may be able to expose the jar to open air without the worry of contamination. I guess maybe put some foil over the lids or something.
relating to this topic, i once boiled cow shit in an open pot for like 2 hours and then put in a bag, broke it thru the bag and poured over a PF cake in a large bowl and covered it with the same bag. Everything grew nicley and there was no contamination.

sterilization is definied as holding a surface/substance/etc at 250F degrees for a period of 15 minutes. lower temperatures can be used for longer periods of time. i'll let you fill in the blanks as to what 3 minutes in a microawave counts for. not to mention, microwaves heat very unevenly. yes, microwave sterilization can be pulled off, but its a crapshoot, and takes more than a single 3 minute nuke to accomplish.
boiling your cow shit and spawning a pf cake to it is different than starting a grain jar. in that case, you don't need the shit to be completely sterile, you've already got a large mass of agressive mycelium ready to chow it down faster than contaminates can gain a foothold.
injecting spores into a jar means its your spores, versus 'them'... them being the millions of spores floating around in the air in your home, as well as already present in the substrate material before you even started. if you don't properly sterilize, guess who's probably going to win?
