sorry to bump an older topic, but im not sure how to use my pc. it's a presto rocker type, and heres the story. its only a 10 psi, so i put an inch and a half water in there, and put it on the stove and set it to medium for about five minutes, then to high for another five. a large amount of steam started coming out of the pressure control piece, but no jiggling, which it should be doing. then the piece started whisteling loudly. so i turned the heat down to low and now its been like that for a couple minutes... just little drops of evaporated water come out of the pressure control piece, but no jiggling. does this sound like its working/not working to anyone?

yeah. i bought the whole thing at walmart for like 20 bucks recently. actually, its a mirro, and this is the exact model: http://www.pressurecooker-outlet.com/mirro4qt.htm it just occured to me that my stovetop is a flat surface. im pretty sure thats the problem.

Tinker with it. As applied heat increases, the rocker weight should begin to rock. That is the time to adjust the heat down. So, the rocker weight barely moves.
A flat top stove may make a difference. If all else fails, try heating on a hot plate, if you have one.

Most leak/spit until a degree of pressure builds up. Then, it self seals, and builds more pressure, until the rocker rocks. Tinker more.
Sadly, very inexpensive PC's, and the proverb, you get what you pay for. Go hand in hand.

You need to throw that sucker on high until it hits pressure. I think you're probably just not getting up to pressure.

no. the whole middle of the pc is indented, and only the perimeter is in direct contact with the stove. im saying, theres gotta be a way to heat it enough to get it up to pressure. its been on medium, and still no jiggling. just the sound of steam escaping.

"Please note: Mirro Pressure Cookers are NOT recommended for use on glass top/flat ranges. They are manufactured with a concave bottom, meaning a large area of the bottom is not in contact with the heat source. This will prevent the transfer of heat and not allow the cooker/canner to come up to pressure if used on a flat top range."
Well, there you go. You might try using a sand bath to heat it. Put a shallow pan filled with sand on your stovetop and put the pressure cooker on that. You could also use mineral oil, but that would be a bit messy.

> its been on medium, and still no jiggling.
Your problem is also that you're not really doing it right.
You need to put the heat on HIGH, until it hits pressure, THEN reduce the heat until the weight jiggles a few times a minute. You won't hit pressure at medium. It's just like boiling water. You put the pot on high until it boils then bring it back a bit. You know a pot would take FOREVER to boil at the medium setting, same is true with a PC.

if you get it to work...
you need to oil your gasket and have it seal better. that is why it is leaking from the handle and such. once on, squeeze it down however many times it takes to seal.
those things are junk. good luck.

Medium on a stove IS boiling and will build to pressure just fine, will just take a little longer. You don't put LC jars in a P.C. on high, now do you?

> Medium on a stove IS boiling and will build to pressure just fine,
You need to reach boiling and pressure BEFORE all the water evaporates or steams away. Medium isn't going to reach boiling in a reasonable amount of time. Go try and see how long it takes you to get tap water to boiling on medium, ha!
> You don't put LC jars in a P.C. on high, now do you?
Of course I do. Your LCs would be highly caramelized if it took you hours to get up to temp at medium.
It sounds to me like you've never used a pressure cooker before. Maybe you shouldn't be giving out advice on using them then.
On my stove, which is the most standard stove you'll find, the running temp for the cycle is in the bottom third of medium-high. It would NEVER reach temp or pressure at medium. I put it on high until it reaches pressure then back it off to the lower side of medium-high.

i went to 20psi yesterday for the first time on my PC nothing bad happened as far as i could tell.
well i started to PC some LC just now and the blow-out valve in the middle of the top did just that, blew out. there is a little tiny hole in the rubber and now it wont hold pressure until i replace it. fortunatly 3P0 is ready and waiting.

$20 works great holds 17 psi just fine for as long as there is water in it.Also holds 9-10 quart jars.

the rocker never started jiggling, which was the whole point of the sand bath. but it was on high for about an hour, and i didnt see any signs of heat, except the burning smell. so i took the bath off the stove and the bottom of the pan was crackling a good bit, i guess from the taking it off the heat right away. then i tried to set it on a metal cookie sheet to cool off, but that thing started getting soft and melting a bit. i dunno if the jars got sterilized, but i do know if it softened metal, it must've been fucking hot, so im gonna inoculate em i guess.

the jars are compeletly burnt. the substrate is literally toasted, there is no water left whatsoever, although i did take the control piece off to vent the steam. i have reason to believe that the water level was probably very low while cooking in the sandbath. the question is, did the substrate get burnt so badly because all the water evaporated, or is it because i didnt have a rack? i put a couple layers of aluminum foil, folded up, into the bottom of the cooker, at someone's suggestion. any thoughts?

It could be either or both. Always have an inch of watter in the bottom and if you dont have a rack use a towel not tin foil.

sounds like both to me.
aluminum foil conducts heat. why do you think most PC's are made out of aluminum? don't it seem silly to use a piece of aluminum to keep your jars off the aluminum bottom of the PC? although i could see it *maybe* working with a whole bunch of it crumpled up, use a rag next time.
water boiling out to nothing will definitely ruin your jars. and maybe your PC.
PC rule of thumb: put your PC through test runs so that you know it functions, and you know how to operate it correctly, before putting anything in it.
in fact that goes for FCs, incubators, whatever. test yer shit out before subjectng your grow to it folks

i think the best bet is just to invest some money in a proper pc. itll be easier and at least ill be able to get up to 15 psi. im not trying to drop 150 on the american standard or whatever they are. anyone have suggestions on a good one for around or under a 100 bucks?

that works just fine. just crumple and fold the foil a bit, just to put space between the bottom and the jars. Aluminum conducts heat, but more importantly, it adjusts quickly to its surrounding temp. the foil is going to be the same temperature as the water around it. i still do this in one of my PC. the PC smells different when i use a rag, and i dont prefer it.

i used to use crumpled foil on the bottom of my PC... but i then just bought a piece of small chickenwire, bent it to stand up in the bottom of my pc, and it worked for a while, but eventually just bent into a concave cage.
So I then bought a few steaming racks for my PC... they work great.

my rack has a gap in it that would otherwise leave 2 jars touching the bottom. i just toss a wad of foil in to fill it up.
i also do put a foil wrap around spawnbags. it changes color and other cool science stuff.

Aluminum conducts heat, but more importantly, it adjusts quickly to its surrounding temp. the foil is going to be the same temperature as the water around it. i still do this in one of my PC. the PC smells different when i use a rag, and i dont prefer it.
well i'll be. i guess i just cant picture it in my PC holding any sort of shape under the weight of 5 loaded quarts or under 2 dozen half pinters... and i kind of like the smell of pressure cooked rag, it smells like... accomplishment

i dunno i heard that back in the day old folks like that used to use PCs for cooking food?
i cant imagine it
i mean... i thought everybody put foil wrapped jars of bird feed and bags full of horse shit and dirty syringes in theirs... what a world!
but to get back on topic, that must be why they're available in thrift stores... robots killing off the uninsured old folks and their heirs must be selling off their PCs to pay funeral expenses.... it all makes sense

in fact that goes for FCs, incubators, whatever. test yer shit out before subjectng your grow to it folks
That's what I'm going to do today, test my thrif PC.
I agree, it's a little wasteful to do before testing and I'm a newb
