I'm collecting petitions about peoples dissatisfaction on their government not doing anything about the oil companies and outrageous gas prices. I want to send them to someone in Washington. Since these are from people all over the country, delivering them to my state representative really will not work. I want to get them to the most important and respectable person I can without them seeing the bottom of a trash bin.
Please do not respond with 'it won't work' or other nonsense. Let's keep this on subject. Thanks

how about sending a check instead of a petition? there are businesses right now researching alternative energy. why not invest some of your money?

While I agree that private investors are needed as well, I think it's a little unfair just to expect common people with limited resources to fund such an undertaking. Alternative energy is a public good. The oil situation affects us all. This isn't some kind of ideal libertarian situation where one person's decision affects only themselves. It is a matter of public interest.
On the other hand, I think the problem with the alternative energy situation is not that there is a lack of interest in it. Rather, I think, it's largely a matter of government intervening on behalf of the oil companies. For example, there is currently a 100% tariff on ethanol from Brazil.
So I don't know. If someone had a petition to increase alternative energy funding, I'd probably sign it. But I wouldn't get my hopes up about how effective it'll be in breaking Big Oil's stranglehold on our society.
