That sweet smell is the verm. You should be OK!

Usually sweet smells are no good.
Starting over is a safer idea.
They could be killed, or couldn't. They might and might not work.

i tryed this once and mine all became contaminated.
BUT... I noticed after I boiled them that they were a darker color than usuall(kind of dark brown as opposed to beige).
I took this to mean that there was mold or bacteria that I had killed. But it came back
So perhaps mine were too far gone. Yours might be fine.

assuming you killed everything inside, the jars would still be viable. obviosly however, you did not kill everything inside and had bacteria or mold or both growing in there.
that sweet smell is NOT verm.
like Liquidkick said: They might and might not work.
if I were you I'd start the jars over and PC them, or buy pre-sterilized jars.

Toss em and start over. Don't waste time and spores. BRF/verm is cheap compared to your time and the cost of the spores, not to mention the frustration that getting set back to day one does when you realize a month from now you've been growing bacteria. RR

My jars always have a sweet smell. I found that it is the wet verm that causes the smell. it goes away in a couple of days. I have never had a single contam. If it kind of smells like corn bread that is what I am talking about.

I considered what you guys have to say and it seems like a 50/50 split so I plan to make enough spore solution that I can do these jars, out of curiosity, and a new batch of jars I will have to buy. Thanks for all the input!
The sweet smell does smell something like corn bread, or some type of cooking anyway. I didn't think vermiculite could have a smell since it is just mica right? I will go check on the jars later today and let you know if they still smell after I boiled them.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that I used tea in the mix. I just dumped a tea bag in the batch. It sure doesn't smell like tea so I doubt that is the cause.

Make some new jars... are the jars too wet maybe? I'm not sure, but i think that wet spot mold gives off a sweet smell...

toss the jars and start over. Never let unsterilized jars sit for more then a few hours.

Since there are like 20 votes for "toss them" here, and my girlfriend also voted "toss them," that is exactly 10 million votes for "toss them". So I plan to toss them.
Thanks for the input!!!
