Green mold, lost everything
    #5915078 - 07/30/06 01:58 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I had two trays of WBS spawned to Hpoo that were contaminated with green mold. Fortunately I had one quart jar of WBS that I did not spawn but simply cased with 50/50. Well, just found some green mold on this one too. I guess it must be the summer season, lots of spores in the air.

This is doubly devistating because I used my last spore syringe to inoculate my jars and did not do any gtg transfers so essentially I have no way to propogate any more mushrooms. If anybody has a few spore prints of some good, easy strains of p. cubensis, please pm me and we can work something out. I want to get back in the saddle and do this right!

Since everything you did contaminated, including the cased wbs, the problem originated in your original grain inoculation, so it's a good thing you didn't do any grain to grain transfers. Hang in there and pay double attention to sterile procedures. Be sure to flame your needle as alcohol does nothing against contaminants on the inside of the needle. Also, make sure to never draw air into your syringe unless you're in front of a flow hood. Even a small amount of air will have contaminant spores within.

Remember, even in the wintertime, the indoor contaminant spore load can be quite high due to what became trapped in your carpet/curtains/bedding, etc.

The jars colonized beautifully. Finally used a glovebox and had a 0% contam rate during the colonization of the jars. I think the problem was that my fruiting area was not clean enough. Also, I did a shoddy job sterilize my bulk substrate. Should have pasteurized but I tried instead the microwave tech. Didn't even leech the compost either. N00b mistakes. I'm pretty sure that my inoculation was okay though...

Interesting. I've never seen green mold take a hold of a casing after the grain jars have survived a 100% colonization.

Send me a PM with your address, I'll send you a print (if you're not picky about strains).
