well i just got rid of all my fish I'm my 55 gal aquarium and i want to get a lizard. i was just wondering what are the basic needs for a lizard. I'm sure that species specific lizards require special things.. I'm just looking for the basic needs for any lizard. like do i need a heat lamp and a heating mat. do i need the tree branch stuff in there or what.. stuff like that..
and I'm also looking for some advice on what kind of lizard to get, i want one that will get big, but doesn't cost allot of $$ I'm looking for under 100$.
thanks in advance for any info..

"yes i want to hear what my mind has to say..." remember opions are like assholes, everyone has one and they all stink.

I run a Reptile rescue and Herpetological society, and have seen many problams with people getting larger animals without doing ALOT of research first. You need to look around at pics and stuff and find something you like. After you have decided on an animal you will need to do alot of reading on the husbandry of the animal. Lizards are going to need a UV light-$30. Without this they will not be able to metabolize calcium or vitamin D3. With vegitarian lizards or those that feed on small insects you are going to need to add a calcium/vitamin suppliment to each feeding. Otherwise they could develope a condition called MBD (metabolic bone disease). That is why you will see alot of iguanas with funny looking legs and feet.
Savannah monitors are nice and doscile if you care for them correctly. They are still 3' carniverous lizards, and if hungry will grab your hand and rip off a good chunk. With any monitors think of them as land dwelling alligators. They can be tamed if gotten young and handeled everyday.
If you have any question please feel free to drop me a PM...
Here is a large list of lizard care sheets... Lizard care This is one of the best sites on lizard and the lady who runs it wrote the book on Iguanas. They also do a bit of research there into better care and lighting requirements... Anapsid And to get more hans on info there are alot of reptile forums out there much like this one.. All reptile forum Reptile forum
And I would suggest you try to adopt an animal from a rescue near you. There are lots of them cross country and around the world. Here is a large one in Cincinnati OH.. Arrowhead Rescue links

these pics are a friends green iguana, the pics are about 6 years old I don't have any newer ones. Its now about 3 1/2 feet long, about 12 years old. He,s a cool pet I quess. My friend has a 400w Hps light hanging above him for the winter time, summer no need. He just eats fruits, and vegs. And gets rounded up one a week to go to the shower, and have warm water spray on him, seems to stimulate the shitting action, Life Span is somewhere around 12-15 years.

Personally I'm not really experienced with it.. did you check out the recent thread on lizards in the pub? Lots things were said about it from what I can remember: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/5903053#Post5903053

ive been reading about care/needs of lizards, i think a bearded dragon would be neat. they seem like they would be a good pet, cuz they seem to want to interact with you, and like attention.
they say the florecent lights need changed every 6 months.. but they said you could use a mercury vapor bulb, but they never said how often they need changed??

Don't get your lizard a heating pad or heating rock that will go in the habitat that it can sit on. Reptiles will sit on these heating devices and cook themselves to death without realizing it, as they are only aware of dangerous temperatures from above (the sun or a heating lamp) and they never know when they're warm enough when being heated from below.

Bearded Dragons are pretty cool... They have them at most pet stores, but usually are fairly large. You can find them as babies...recent hatches right from the pet stores, and they are a blast to raise, because they are clumsy. I have had anoles, whch dont grow big, but they dont mind being handled, as well as a green iguana, but my favorite was the Bearded Dragon, because it was so clumsy as a baby and grew up to be very friendly, for a lizard that is...haha
