terrarium advice

i'm new at all of this, so i'm a bit concerned about my terrarium working. i've read the teks and the FAQ, and i tried to pick up most of the things that i think will make a good terrarium. i have a plastic container that is 1ft. wide, 1 1/2 ft. long, and 1ft. high. it has a plastic lid that is NOT airtight. i'm not sure whether it needs to be airtight or not so i was gonna put a plastic seal under the lid if it does. i bought a 100 W aquarium heater. is 100 W too big? the temp in the room is around 73 degrees fareinheit, so i suppose putting the heater in a quart glass will heat it up a bit. if anyone knows anything about using these i would appreciate some input. i dont wanna make it too hot that it kills the mushrooms but there is no way to adjust the temp on the heater. it says that it will stay around 80 degrees. i'm gonna use 2 inches of moist perlite for humidity. will i still need to spray in the terrarium? if so, how often? i read that the terrarium must be fanned out often too. how often do i do this? if someone can give me a few tips to build a good terrarium with what i have, it would be greatly appreciated.

it doesn't have to be airtight i don't use a heater... in fact i don't measure anything but from what you say it sounds good i spray my cakes once a day... but at times i forget the perlite should make it self regulated with the humidity thing just open the lid once in a while to air it out... leave the lid off for a bit so the mushrooms can get some fresh air ya know what? i don't even use any special set up have you seen those greenhouse boxes for seedlings? i use that for my cakes i fill the bottom with moist perlite. although i should point out the fact that the lid isn't very high so i dont' recommend growing the bigger strains. when the shrooms reach the lid they just start growing a bit slanted... it's nothing to worry about.

First off, the heater is for an incubator. Your box sounds ideal for that. 80 deg isn't perfect but will work. If it's seethrough it needs to be set in the dark, or covered with foil. Put your jars in it and you'll have about two weeks to read up and decide how is best to set up your terrarium. Save your perlite for then. www.fanaticus.com http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms_mmgg.shtml

how come PF-tek says any room temp is fine for them to incubate? this is where i get confused...i hear that they need to be above 80 degrees and other times they dont? so the perlite is enough for humidity? i dont need to spray it at all, just air it out for about an hour once a day by leaving the lid off. is that right?

Quoted from Stamets, "The Mushroom Cultivator" : The best colonizing temps are 84 to 86 degrees..... I do 84 degrees. Thermal death limits have been established at 106 degrees. The best fruiting Temperatures are 74 to 78 degrees..... I do 74 to 76 degrees. ------------------------------------------- Perilite works great for humidity......2" of perilite that has 1" of water and Hydrogen Peroxide mix. You don't leave the lid off for an hour each day......lolz You open the lid and fan the mushrooms a couple times a day. hope that helps.

They will colonize at room temperature, but a more optimum temperature for incubation is around 83 degrees. 75 degrees is ideal for fruiting (your terrarium), but I don't heat mine at all, just let it go at room temp (about 70) and it works fine. Perlite is enough for humidity. I use perlite and don't mist at all, however if your casings look a little dry go ahead and mist. Bob

1) read this (from the Magic mushroom Growers Guide aka MMGG) http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms_mmgg.shtml#80_Degree_Colonization 2) It's debatable whether just perlite is enough. The best thing for you to do is monitor it and decide if you need more. Hope that helps. Free Spore Ring Damn, I got to watchin Joe Dirt and forgot to hit continue for awhile.

I use purified water.....and the mix ratio is 10 to 1. 10 parts water to 1 part hydrogen peroxide. This keeps contams down.

i think i'm all straightened out now. i'm gonna use my aquarium heater for incubation only and then let them fruit in the terrarium at room temp (73 degrees). i'll just let the perlite and water do the humidification, and i'll air it out 2 times a day
